    Clearcoat Peeling?

    *Gulp* oh no..





    Is this what I think it is? It started a couple weeks ago, and has since gotten a little worse. Right in the top-center of my hood. At first it was a bunch of little white dots. Since then it's grown, and now looks like little holes.

    I've never seen it occur before, and not sure why it's happening to me. It's a 13 year old truck. I can't swear to what the previous owner may have done(or not done) to the paint, so there's plenty of gray area there. It makes me feel a little bad because since I've had it, I've kept it protected pretty well I think. I don't have a garage, so it weathers whatever the nature in Louisiana has to offer. But it's always had a good coat of wax, plenty of maintenance. I thought that would prevent this from happening?

    If that's what I'm seeing, then I guess I already know the answer. Repaint is the only option?

    Unfortunately it looks like the beginning of a clear coat failure. Repaint of affected areas/ panels is necessary to fully fix it.

    As a temporary solutions you could apply pure/ gentle polish to cover it up (Deep Crystal Polish DC2, M07 Show Car Glaze or Ultimate Polish).

        I would say 4-6 inches in that one spot. But I also noticed that the same thing looks to be starting another 6 inches or so to the left of where this spot is.

        I really don't have the money for a full body paint job, so I think that will be out of the question. There's a mechanic I work with that owns a paint shop..or did, his brother runs it now. So I've already started speaking with him about it. I guess I'm going to get some estimates soon.

        I'd really really like to limit a repaint to just the hood if that's possible. He recommended doing the hood and front fenders..maybe even back into the doors if a total repaint wasn't a financially viable option for me. But also said it may be possible to partially sand down the hood and repaint/recoat, leaving a decent blend. I guess the idea is to blend the hood back into itself? I don't know much about it so any suggestions are welcomed!

        Thanks for the suggestion on the polish..I can't stand to see it looking like this, so I'll probably give that a shot as a temporary solution.

          It's gonna be hard to make it look like nothing happened. I would rather opt for a full panel(s) repaint.

            For sure. Believe me, I would rather do the same. But is there something less I can do that would still yield an aesthetically pleasing result?

            You suggested in your first post that a repaint of 'affected' areas/panels would be necessary to fully fix it. As far as I can tell, the hood is the only affected area/panel.

              Anything you might do that improves the look is going to be very temporary at best. You may find that even if you do hit on something that visually makes it look quite a bit better that you'll have to do that process every week or two, and it's still going to be a losing battle. 13 years in the Louisiana sun, and the heat from the engine, have conspired against the paint on the hood of your truck and, as you already know, the only real way to fix it is to repaint the panel. The good news is that this doesn't necessarily mean you will experience similar failure on other panels.

                Yeah Michael I was going to ask that next, if I can expect to see this start happening all over my truck(I do not currently see that). Glad to know that will not necessarily be Lizzy's fate!

                  I am sorry about that. I know the feeling. I opt for a full body repaint. I have a Honda need I say more. Honda's paint is terrible and they know it. They did nothing for me so I had to do everything financially myself. But at least you have a friend in the business. Good Luck.                     is it possible that the clear coat be wet sanded off till the base coat is bare and then a fresh clear coat be sprayed?

                      May have to blow thick coat of dust off of this thread by the time I have it done, but I promise I will repost with pics when it happens.
