How to properly apply 2 layers of wax?

First time detailer here (did my first 5 step a few days ago) and I have a question regarding waxing.

I know Meguiar's recommends 2 layers of wax (I'm using ULW). However, how do we do this properly? Do we apply once, let dry, remove, then apply next layer?

Additionally, due to time constraints and me needing the car, I drove it after only 1 layer. If I wanted to add another layer, how would I go about doing that? Hose down, dry, then apply ULW (or would drying with microfiber remove the first layer of wax?) Or would using Quick Detailer spray, followed by ULW work?

I'd imagine just waxing now is a bad idea, considering it's been outside and probably contaminated and will scratch the car prior to any cleaning.

So after you lay down the first layer, wait about 24hours or something, and apply a second layer. If your car was used within the 24 hour time period but wasn't rained on or anything, a simple wipe down with Ultimate Quick Detailer would be safe to do. After the wipe down, you would apply the second coat.

Little clarification added here as I see now you had a few questions.

When applying the first layer, let it dry to a haze so when you wipe a finger on the wax on the paint, it doesn't smear which means the wax is dry and ready to be removed. Do this again a day later.

If I understand correctly, despite being a synthetic polymer, Ultimate Liquid Wax doesn't require a curing time and can be wiped off prior to a swipe test (about 5 minutes). Does that mean they can be layered after drying, or is waiting a day still neccessary?

Cure time is different to haze time. Normally, you apply a wax wait for it to haze maybe 5-15 minutes, depending on humidity and temperature, then remove the hazed wax. Cure time is different. After removing the polymer or synthetic sealant, you wait for 12-24 hours before putting another coat of sealant. This is because synthetic sealants (well, most of them anyway) require this period to allow the polymers to cross-link with the paint and fully bond to the paint. Traditional waxes normally don't require this cure time, normally this applies to synthetic sealants

24 hours is best. 30 minutes or so at least is nice, but not like the wax will all fall off if you dont do 24 hours.

Why are you doing this?
to me it's just a waste of time and product.
It's already be proven that layering is a myth and in some cases there is less wax left on the paint the more you wax it.
imo, pick a wax you like that gives you the results the first time you apply it.

We do recommend two thin layers, just to ensure uniform coverage and appearance. When properly applied (ie, very thin) it can be difficult to see just where you've applied the wax, especially on lighter colors. With experience though it actually becomes much easier to tell where you've applied and maybe where you've missed a spot. So..... apply the wax/sealant, let it dry, wipe off the haze, then apply again, let dry, wipe off the haze. Ideally, when using a synthetic sealant, a 12-24 cure time is a good idea but it's not always practical to do this. Doing a second application of a synthetic sooner isn't going to cause a problem, and it's highly doubtful that anyone would ever be able to visually distinguish whether you'd waited an hour or a day between applications.

Obviously you want a clean surface when applying wax. If you just drove the car one day and the weather was nice, a careful wipe down with a quick detailer and a few microfiber towels should properly clean the surface of any loose contaminants so that you can apply wax to it. If you drove for a few days and you picked up a lot of fall out, then a proper wash is probably best. As long as you're using a quality car wash you won't strip off the first application.

Spot on. Clean the surface - QD, wash, whatever it needs based on its current state.

Mario is right about the actual layering of waxes and sealants so don't expect an ever increasing level of gloss, protection, whatever if you use several applications. Sure, we could probably sell you more wax if we supported that process, but it just doesn't work that way.

I used to apply 2 layers as well. Then I realized that it was probably not necessary for me. I wax often, like once every 3 weeks or so. The sole purpose of 2nd layer is even coverage and it will not improve the protection. As for appearance wise, it will not make a difference for light color vehicles.

For people who wax every 3 months, the 2nd layer is a must.

Applying a 2nd coat of wax is more psychological than for adding gloss or extra protection, and also has become my habit. I put real thin coats anyway, so I'm not really wasting product.
