  • Thoughts & Comments on spot painting a car

My rear quarter panel has 2 dents and the paint is beginning to crack.

Any thoughts on having a body shop do spot painting. (Not sure which ones will do it - as they do not make as much $$$)

I think it would be a challenge to blend in the new paint. The body shop usually paints the whole panel and polish and blend in with the neighboring panels.

I would go for repainting the entire panel to ensure that the paint color is even and consitent with the rest of the car, this is really important especially if your car is metallic or pearl. On solid colors, you may be able to get away with spot repainting, but the overall cost of spot painting a panel vs. doing the entire panel may be very minimal, since they will still have to sand a large portion of the panel and reclear the entire panel to get the even look.

The problem I (just my opinion) have with spot repairs is that in time, the areas that were worked on may show up as uneven patches especially if the painter who did the car isn't as good as he/she should be. I had some experience with that before, as well as seen other cars where spot repairs were done.
