  • Product and technique for removing paint speckles

My '01 black Boxster gets driven in summers only, and our are short. It has not been well-detailed for a few years, although I have kept it washed well. Now is the time for a complete do-over.

The front end has a number of small white paint freckles that seem baked into the clearcoat. I am not talking about rock chips, these are plainly paint. Likely thrown by other cars I am following when white line paint work is in season, which it seems to be here every summer.

Will polish take these out, or do I need clay?

I have some swirling from one machine-detail job I got a few seasons back, and from my own hand work. I've no machine and wish to work by hand.

Is Swirl-X the thing to use?

What I am wanting to know is how many products to get, and what to use first.

I'm pretty new to this...but everything I've seen says you want to clay the car before polishing. A few years back I did get some paint like the kind you are describing on my car and clay did take it off. Since it needs to be clayed anyway I would start there.

This should answer most of your questions.

Th. 5-step paint care cycle is definitely the way to do.

SwirlX is great if you already have the product. Otherwise, I would recommend Ultimate Compound, it is stronger than SwirlX.

          1. Wash - Gold Class soap, 2 buckets, grit Guards, good towels, mitts, etc
          2. Clay - Smooth Surface clay kit - This is a mild clay product, hopefully all you will need. The Professional Blue Clay is a little stronger, you could consider buying it instead from the start, rather than having to buy both. You'd just need to buy the QD or other lube seperately.
          3. Clean - You can by Ult. Compound for a strong cleaner, and SwirlX or Ult. Polish for you mild cleaner/polish
          4. Polish - Optional, esp if you choose Ult. Polish. But #7 is a good choice if you wanted.
          5. Wax - Ult. Wax, Nxt 2.0, gold Class, or other favoite.
          6. Wax - 2 thin coats is best

          7. Maintain - Ult. Quick Wax or Gold Class Spray Wax after future washes.

And then towels, applicators... and any other products for glass, trim, interior, etc.
