  • Need help removing wax from plastic on bottom parts of my 2011 mustang

I try to detail properly, I really do...but it never quite works out. Despite my best efforts, I have some wax that I've gotten on the plastic parts of the bottom parts of my mustang. Some have been there awhile. I found one thread on there regarding this type of thing, but I had a few questions...

I've heard of using peanut butter or other products, but I've also seen people saying you really have to put some work, ie scrubbing or hard brushing, to getting stuff out...how do I do that and not scratch the plastic to heck?

I will tape off those parts of the car from now on, but the damage is done. I'd be most appreciative of any tips or advice people could give me.

It's a shame to have my beautiful car look disgraceful because of waxy plastic.

You are referring to the textured gray/black plastic trim?

I wouldnt want to rub too hard, as you could affect the texture. But a good brush/toothbrush can help.

The idea is to use an oil to soften the dried wax (which is also effectively an oil) so it comes off easier. The peanut butter just helps it stick and stay where you apply it.

But you can also look into things like APC, or #39 Vinyl Cleaner. WD-40 can do all kinds of things sometimes.

Not sure if one of the newer waxes that can be used on plastic would help any.

You could mix up a small solution of dishwashing detergent in water and use a soft toothbrush to clean the area. We're not huge fans of using dish detergent to wash a car on a regular basis, but since it is so effective at removing wax and this should be a one time thing, you shouldn't have any problems doing so.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I never tried to get the wax off last year. To be frank, I was afraid that nothing would take it off since it's been so long, and now it's a year later...

So I guess my first question is: can this #39 thing, dishwashing stuff, peanut butter or anything else remove something that's been on the plastic for years... exposed to sun and heat ,etc?

Here's a couple of pics. You can see some on the plastic below the driver mirror, and the second pic is a really good one of the "damage" i've done to the plastic at the bottom of the car. *so ashamed*

Any tips, help is appreciated. Thank you.

M39 Heavy duty vinyl Cleaner is good stuff. I have used it to remove wax marks. Some time you might even need to add brush to get it completely removed. I have also used APC+ to remove wax marks left on trim.
