  • Help with 1989 Black Bentley Turbo-R

Hi, just purchased a 1989 Bentley Turbo-R, black in color. I have not received the car yet but am anticipating work to do on the car. This is the best picture I have of the paint in sunlight and appears to need a little bit of work. There are talks of soft paint and hard paint and I don't know how you would classify a Bentley. I have a 10" orbital buffer that I use on my other vehicles with good results so I was planning on claying this car, then using the buffer with M205 then topping it with NXT paste wax. With this little bit of info given, do I sound like i'm on the right track? thanks in advance

Wash, Clay, and a test spot with #205 wont hurt. Then can judge better from there.

      ^^ Agreed.

You won't know how hard or soft your paint is until you do a test spot. You're certainly on the right track though. If the M205 isn't correcting those holograms, you may need to step it up to UC or M105. Failing that, you may need to purchase a good DA to replace that orbital..

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

From a distance, it sure looks good.

Davey is right, after some test spots you may wish to step up to a dual action, especially if it turns out to be "hard" paint.

The paint looks fairly hammered in that top image - those look like fairly severe holograms and possible water spots as well. As for what you have on hand now, an orbital buffer is not intended to be used for any kind of actual correction work. They work well for spreading pure polishes or waxing, but lack the power to really do much correction.

I have only worked on newer Bentleys, so I can't offer much experience-based advice regarding how hard or soft the paint will be. I would expect to need more than M205, and likely more than an orbital to correct those holograms though.

We're with Mark on this one - the paint in the top picture looks to be severely swirled and in need of some serious help. M205 is a fantastic product, but it's a final finishing polish and as such isn't all that powerful. For a test spot on this car we'd skip M205 for starters and go right into Ultimate Compound. Again, like Mark said, the buffer you have isn't terribly powerful, but if you've had good results with it on other cars, and since you have possession of it, there's no harm in giving it a go. Whether this paint is hard, soft or somewhere in the middle is something you'll have to figure out with your test spot - that's really the only way to know for sure.

Thanks everybody for your replies. Thanks Mark for helping clarify my buffer compared to what I probably need to buy in the long run. I'll go with the suggestions and test spot away as soon as I get the car....... thanks again !!
