  • HELP!!!! 2002 Jeep Cherokee

Hey guys, I have a 2002 Jeep Cherokee and it desperately needs attention. I have neglected the paint for several years and now I want it to look like my 2009. I understand that the best method is the 5-step-paint-care-cycle but what products should I start with. The Jeep is dark gray and has that hard plastic on the lower half (sorry for lack of pics but I load some shortly). I recently washed it and the paint looks good from a distance but up close you can really see the webs, swirls, and feels really rough to the touch. HELP!!!!!

Assuming you're working by hand, here's a rough outline of what you could start looking at product-wise:

    1) Wash with Gold Class wash
    2) Clay with the Smooth Surface clay kit
    3) Get rid of the swirls with Ultimate Compound
    4) Polish with Ultimate Polish
    5) Wax with any wax, Ultimate Wax is great stuff
    6) Maintain with a spray wax if you choose.

Oops! Forgot to mention I'll be using a 9" orbital buffer at least until I get the money and confidence to use a DA.

The 9" orbital buffers are not powerful enough to do any sort of swirl or scratch removal. They are essentially only good for spreading out a pure polish or a wax. Personally, I don't see the use of the large orbital buffers, as I feel like I have much better control with a hand pad, and the time tradeoff is minimal if any.

          Alright, how does this sound:

          1. Wash (Ultimate Wash Wax)
          2. Clay (Smooth Surface Clay kit. Used UD instead of QD)
          3. UC
          4. Wax (Deep Crystal System Carnuba Wax)

All done by hand, saving for a DA. Had a little bit of trouble with the UC but started using the "wax on wax off method". Like I said before the paint on this vehicle has been neglected for years but when I was done it was really something to see. I took pictures but they didn't show well, should I add some steps or possibly focus more on a particular product. I skipped the UP because it looked that much better when I was finished with the UC. I eventually want to do a full detail of my 2009 Camry but I wanted to see what the process would do to the older paint first. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

            1. That's fine but UW&W could be considered a bit of a waste if you're only going to clay and compound the car anyway. One of Meguiars cheaper car washes would be fine. Gold Class is my favourite.

            2. I assume you meant UQD? UQD is not suitable for claying and again would be a waste anyway, since it is more expensive. Stick with the QD for claying.

            3. Yes

            4. That's fine, although the Deep Crystal wax is not that durable. It does look nice on darker colours though. For a more durable wax, use NXT 2.0 or UW.

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Thanks for the quick response. And I really thought I was doing something special with using UQD while I clay oh well live and learn. I actually have some NXT on the way but the problem I have is in my area no one place has everything I need so I have to go to Advanced, Autozone, Walmart, Kmart, and Target just to find one product here or there.
