  • ( Update Pictures ) Quick Question

    Hello,
I am getting ready to detail my dads truck and wanted to make sure I was going in the right direction. It is a 2002 white F150 that hasn't had wax in 2 years. Heres the plan:

    1) Wash with NXT
    2) Clay bar c-2000
    3) 1 coat of ColorX
    4) 2 coats of #21

I was kinda wondering if the colorx is a beter choice than say #80 to use before #21. ANy input would be Great. Thanks!!

#80 vs ColorX. Depends if you have swirls and cob webbing to remove. If so then ColorX wouldn't be the better choice of the 2. ColorX is good for bad oxidation and probably the stains that will be in the white paint.

#80 will remove the swirls and cob webs. #80 will also clean the paint to help restore the brightness back to white.

Either way sounds like a good plan. Don't forget the pics!

    Good luck!

      Scrub,
Thanks for the quick reply, so by your reply do you think colorx for the stains and oxidation, followed by #80. The paint isn't in that bad of shape. I was just wondering about the #80 because I see alot of you guys have good things to say about it. Again Thanks, I am learning quite abit about this stuff and I won't learn if I don't ask.

        Tough question here...

Which product do you have? Do you have a buffer (DA)?

I think #80 could serve both purposes in one step. Polish and clean. To take the guess work out try half a panel with ColorX and half with #80 and compare the results.

If you have the desire, product and time then go ahead and use both. Time will be a major factor. If you have all day then go for it.

        Keep on asking!

          Scrub,
I do have a buffer(7424 PC), I also have the colorx on hand but I am going order the #80 tonight. It only takes Meguiars 2 days to ship to MI. GREAT SERVICE. The best thing I have a week for the truck. I'll just do the inside first. Again, Thank You.

If you are dealing with anything more than light swirling, you may want to order some 83 as well. Then follow that with 80. Only step up to 83 if 80 is not clearing up the problem.

              Thanks travisdecpn,
Is the #83 more or less abrasive than the #80.Like I said the paint dosen't look that bad, minor swirls. The white seems to hide alot. Maybe I will order both while I'm at just in case. I am still pretty new at all this and was wondering if I could screw something up with #83 if it is more abrasive.Again Thanks for the reply.

83 is more aggressive than 80. In the case that a couple of passes with 80 don't remove remove the defects, 83 can be used. Start with the least aggressive product first, in this case 80.

                    Hey,

My suggestion would be to start with #80 Speed Glaze with a W-8006 Polishing Pad. Move the buffer very slow with 3-5lbs of downward pressure on the buffer's head. Work the product until it is only a light haze/residue, then remove with a MF towel. Run the buffer at speed #5.

As the others have said, if #80 does not remove the marring, you may need to go more aggressive and use #83 DACP. Apply it with a clean pad (do not use a pad for more than one product) the same way as #80. With Meg's #83, it will take a little longer to break down the diminishing abrasives. Allow 3-5 minutes per 2'x2' area. Make sure you work it until it is a slight residue and then remove with a MF towel. After the #83, you should step back down to #80 and complete the process.

Top the finish with 2 coats of: NXT Tech Wax, or #20 topped with #16, or #21 Synthetic Sealant. I really love the look of #21 on light colors!!!

Please post some before and after pics! Good luck!!

                      Thanks Tim,
As usual very informative post, I am going to use the #21. I just purchased some and can't wait to try it. Just to clarify, are you saying use the 20 first then top with the #21 or the #21 by itself. I will take some pictures. Thanks Again!!

                        Hey,

Just use the #21 by itself. (I would apply 2 coats. ) You are going to LOVE the look on the white!

                        Take care,
                        Tim

Hello, I just wanted to share the pictures of the truck. I ran out of time with this because of all the little what looked like rust spots all over. I was pleased for the most part. Thanks for the advice from everyone. Used NXT wash, colorx to remove the spots, and #21.
