  • Newbs first detail

Hey all, I am new to the forum and have just recently began looking into detailing, wanting to take better care of the exterior of my vehicle. I've always loved every Meguiars product I've used, so I've decided to stick with it for this new hobby as well. And when I found this site, it just made sense!

So here's what I'm working with. My DD and the vehicle I will be learning all of my techniques on is a 2003 Mazda 6. The surface is a creamy metallic silver, and everything but the front and rear bumpers and side skirts were repainted last August after some hail damage. I have never done anything with the paint besides wash it frequently. I am also a little unsure of the quality of the paint job from last fall. Guess I'll find out when I start in on it!

Here is what I have so far, and my plan of action. I mistakenly asked these questions in my introduction thread, and Murr1525 helped me out. Hoping you all might be able to give a little more input and advice! I will be doing a panel at a time with the entire process, as I may only be able to get to sections at a time with my schedule.

-First, wash the vehicle with Gold Class Wash, final rinse with just the hose, and dry with an "Absorber" towel (want to pick up a megs Water Magnet, when I have the chance)

-Then use the Smooth Surface Clay kit over entire vehicle, cleaning all of the paint.

    -Wash and dry again.

-Next, I'll apply Ultimate Compound to entire vehicle, front to back, paying close attention to any imperfections/scratches and swirls that I find.

-Then I'll finish with Ultimate Liquid Wax. I'm planning on doing two light coats, as has been suggested by several members in my research.

All of this will be done by hand.

I'm planning on maintaining this finish with a wash at least every couple of weeks, followed with Ultimate Quik Wax, and a couple of light coats of ULW every couple of months after a wash, and claying once a year. I am using the two bucket method for the wash with a new chenille microfiber wash mitt for the vehicle, with a separate mitt for the wheels. I plan on getting some grit guards for the buckets too, too prevent swirls such as much as possible.

One question I did have though was, especially with this first detail, is if following UC up with a cleaner wax such as Colorx or a sealant such as M20 Polymer Sealant a good idea, or both? Then topping off with ULW? After reading about possible haziness on some paints after UC (soft, delicate paints mostly, and I have no idea what I have yet) I thought it might be a good idea to at least have some on hand. I have regular Megs Cleaner Wax, but have heard many good things about Colorx. I will of course be doing a test spot of the UC before applying it to the entire car. Not anticipating any problems at all and I may be over thinking things a bit! But I figured I might as well ask!

Anyways, love all the new things I'm learning here, and am looking forward to getting into this hobby and learning much more from you all!

If you are worried about UC leaving any haze then check in direct sunlight and if there is any then go ahead and follow up with Ultimate Polish.

When applying UC, be sure to put some pressure behind the pad. Use the length of your figures instead of your finger tips to ensure even coverage and to help prevent putting in any marring.

I would use UP before using a cleaner wax to clean up any marring by hand.

I was actually wondering about UP, if i encounter hazing, I just failed to mention it in my post! Looks like I'll be using the entire Ultimate system pretty much, minus the wash. UC, UP, and ULW.

      Sound like a plan?

No need to re-wash after claying.

You just have to judge for yourself if you want to re-wax every few months, or go with UP then Wax, Wax if you need some cleaning ability before waxing.
