  • Claying Mystery Problem

So I decided to do the first real detail of my car this year. I used half dawn and half Meguiar’s Deep Crystal Car wash. After I dried the car I used Meguiar’s Clay (unopened from last year) and Griot’s speed shine for lube. I’ve never had a problem with this combination until this time. Every few inches, the clay would just get stuck and leave residue on the car, well I thought I was using too little detail spray so I tried more and nothing seemed to work. After I got through the entire car, I had to go back and take out all of the residue with a microfiber cloth and some water/rubbing alcohol mix. I don’t know what I did wrong or what caused that but like I said that combo has never failed me. Any suggestions? Unfortunately, I did not take pics as It was dark and I just wanted to wipe it off asap.

Well, from what I know using dish soap is never really a good thing for washing cars. I was say Used just the meguiars car was soap next time I think you will yield better results. As for the clay, What the car hot or warm to the touch when you were doing the claying process? I have never used Griots speed shine either so maybe switching to Quick detailer would help. If you haven't give that a shot as the lubrication for claying and see what you get.

I don't normally use dish soap. I only use it when I detail the car for the first time of the season to make sure all the previous wax is off. It was at night when the temp was around 76 or so, not super hot and the car was also not hot to the touch. Like i said, i have used the Griot's with Meguiar's clay before with no probs. The clay is like 5 months old (still in wrapper) so could it be too old? And my speed shine is also like 6 months old so; could that have added to the “dryness” of the car? The parts that actually glided over the car with no probs did lift some of the bonded contaminants but i don’t think it was enough to consider the car clean.

If they clay was coming up dirty, or the paint felt rough there, then it may have been grabbing on contaminants.

            Re: Claying Mystery Problem

I tried again this weekend with no problems whatsoever. Washed the car with only Deep crystal wash, bought a new meguiars clay kit and used it and it worked like it should have. So I guess I must have put too much dawn the first time and it really dried out the car, so i'll just have to avoid that in the future. all is well in my universe!

Wouldnt think that is a cause, but who knows. Just have to see if it ever happens again.
