  • M40 Shelf Life ?

Recently purchased a bottle of M40 at an O'reilly's Auto Parts. There computer showed one bottle in stock, but no one knew where it was at. The found it in a back room and it was "dusty". When I started to use it didn't look right. It appeared watered down and a little separated. I mean the liquid appears to be two shades. The smell, if any is industrial. My question, is there a shelf life on M40. I stopped using it after a small application, or would it be good to go.
    Thanks
    Rick

It should last quite a few years if stored properly... but who knows if that was or not.

I'd say it is not good to use. Should be able to take it back, or have customer service on here help you out.

I have some M40 that I have had on my own shelf for a good 5 years and it still works great. I just give it a good shake every time I use it and I don't seem to have any performance issues with the product. That said, if the separation seems extreme and you are getting questionable results, don't hesitate to call the customer service hotline and get a second opinion.

I make it point to never buy detailing products from any source that does not move the product out regularly. I know if I ordered from ADS or AG, I'm getting fresh product....and I store all my supplies in a cool room temp area in my house

The smell (at least to me) should be that of, 'leather.'

I had a bottle (that was 'lost' after moving) at least 5-6 years old...no problem. I kinda think M-40 has the life span of a Twinkie.

With M40 being a water based dressing, you might see some separation after a period of time, but it should mix back together with a good shake and be just fine. We would think that sitting on a shelf inside a store M40 would have a very long shelf life, on the order of many years, but you never know what might have happened to it in transit. It could have sat outside on a loading dock in the middle of winter somewhere years ago and that could kill it.

Still, give it a good shake and see if it mixes back together. If it does, it's perfectly fine. If not, you might to want to take it back to the store and point out the apparent age of the product when you bought it. As for the aroma, I, personally, have always thought this was our one product that does have that bit of an industrial smell to it. I don't find it offensive, just not quite as nice as some of our other products. Then again, someone once said they loved the smell of our old Last Touch aerosol because it smelled like bing cherries. I thought it smelled like RAID bug killer. Whatever.

Everytime I went into the garage I would shake the bottle of M40. Yesterday I used it in my work vehicle, while most of the separation was gone the still seemed to be a small amount of discoloration. It appeared to work just fine. I didn't want to jump the gun on a product I was using for the first time, but now I'm thinking about all the products shipped to stores in the winter, sitting in all those unheated trucks :-)

Just a comment...that is EXACTLY the reason I don't purchase (stuff that needs shipping and is freezable) on-line in the winter. If I do need something, I just bite the bullet (read as paying MSRP and then some) and have a local shop/store get it from their LOCAL distribution center.
