  • Matt Black Paint on Clear Coat Removal

Hi All, First of all, my Name is Carl and Im new here

I've got a small project on my hands and would like some good community advice.
I've looked around and last person I saw with a "similar" issue used "Easy Off" Over cleaner on a big rig...

Not sure I want to go down that path. So I've got a Metallic White Mazda 3 with a matt black painted area on the hood.
I'm looking to remove it as the guy who painted it didn't exactly prep much. The black is coming off in certain areas from shear sun/wind/particles in the air ... or at least it seems... I tested a left over rubbing compound on an inconspicuous area and behold a squeaky clean white appears under with a nice clear - still glass like - coat.

Now The paint has been on there for 6-8 months that I know of, what product(s) would you suggest I go with for removal ... looks like 1 or 2 coats of paint ... very bare and if you rub your finders or a wash cloth on it it taints off black.

If pictures would help let me know, one snap away.

    Thanks!

Are you sure that you're going to DIY? I'm no painter but to remove Paint or damage it is quite simple. Just take some coarse sand paper and you're good to go.
BTW is there CC on matte black?

Any chance you could find out exactly what type of paint was sprayed on the car? Different products may work best based on what type of coating you are working on.

If there is a nice, shiny and healthy looking clear coat under what sounds to be an extremely thin coat of matte black, you definitely want to stay away from any sort of sandpaper (sorry, Wukin2k2). If you were able to abrade it off easily with a bit of rubbing compound, then we'd suspect a bit of M105 on a foam polishing pad with a DA will cut through it pretty quickly as well. Sure, you'll load up your polishing pad with the old paint, but you won't damage anything.

Sorry for not reading it carefully. Thought he was going to do a repaint himself that's why I suggest sandpapers.
