  • Is there a recommended product "pairing"?

    Hello all,

I haven't been on the forums here for years. I'm in the process of cleaning up a few cars/projects I have sitting around so the first thing I'm doing of course is restocking my Meguiars arsenal. I could be mistaken, but I thought years ago there was a sticky or forum section for recommended product usage that listed a product, what its main purpose is for, and then a recommended product to use prior application (example- a cleaner) and a recommended product to use after (example- wax etc).
Does something like this exist anywhere? I've looked for hours now and I've finally given up.

Other than the "cut chart" I found I can't even find an all inclusive list of which products are most "aggressive" if you will. ColorX is described as being able to remove oxidation, swirls, etc... but isn't even listed on the cut chart.

Meguiars is by far the best product line, and I don't mind paying to have the best - But I have to know what products to buy! I understand much of this will be personal preference, I'm not looking for a definitive list of how/when to use everything - just recommendations.

p.s. I'd like to see this for the "standard" car care products and professional.

    Thanks for any help!

Std-Ultimate Compound, then Ultimate Polish, and follow up with Ultimate Paste Wax

    Pro-105, then 205, follow up with #21, or #26

      For starters...... welcome back!

If it's been a few years then, yes, things have indeed changed a bit in our lineup. In a lot of ways we actually simplified things because of the new abrasive technology that we introduced with So1o in the Mirror Glaze line a few years back, and that has expanded to M105 and M205 but also over to the Consumer Line in the form of Ultimate Compound and Ultimate Polish. This now gives us a consumer product that will cut faster and leave a better overall finish than even good old M83 Dual Action Cleaner Polish.

In our Saturday Classes we've been using Ultimate Compound as our go to defect removal liquid since it was introduced a few years ago, and we've only encountered 2 vehicles where we had to step into the Mirror Glaze Pro line and grab M105 to handle the defects. That's a heck of a track record!

You didn't mention if you were working by hand or with a buffer, but either way it's pretty remarkable what can be achieved these days using either Ultimate Compound/Ultimate Polish or M105/M205 - either combo being topped off with your wax of choice. Might we suggest........ you guessed it, Ultimate Wax!

For the "regular" or fast way but not optimal results, Cleaner wax or colorX finished up with either Gold Class, Nxt 2.0, or ultimate wax (liquid or paste, your choice). It is more than sufficient for the average detailer, but you waon't be removing deeper swirls/imperfections with a cleaner wax.

What I have now : Ultimate compound, swirlX, Meguiars M07 showcar glaze, and NXT 2.0, I'm happy with the results and experience with NXT 2.0 so at the moment I have no plans to get Ultimate wax.

Re: Is there a recommended product "pairing"?

Hi guys, thanks for the replies. I've been out of town the last few days so I'm just now able to reply. Michael - Sorry, I forgot to mention... I usually work by hand, but I do have an orbital and I just bought a new Dual Action V2.

So I have 2 cars I need to put a recipe together for:

          1. Is an old little 4cylinder turbo car that has what I believe is a red single stage paint on it (no clear coat), that has been sitting for 8 years in the sun and hasn't moved. When I hit it with ColorX it looks pretty decent and brings back some shine (especially if I go over it twice). The paint is beyond horrible without a doubt...like, when you rub your hand across it feels like 2000 grit sandpaper. I just want quick /easy as possible results so I can sell the car. Is there something recommended that would be better than ColorX? Also, do I need to apply a wax after ColorX?

          2. Is my yellow corvette that just sits in the garage. The paint is pristine. It sounds like the Ultimate Polish, Ultimate wax or NXT 2.0 is the best plan here is that correct?

What is the difference between the consumer line stuff and professional? I like the sound of using professional stuff better. hahah!

I think I have more of the consumer line stuff in my garage then AutoZone has on their shelves so just let me know what I should use and I'll gladly do it! Thanks for your help guys!

Re: Is there a recommended product "pairing"?

            1. ColorX is a cleaner/wax, so nothing is needed after. You could try a test spot with some Ult. Compound before the ColorX.

            2. Yes, that is good. Also, claying if you never have.

            3. No real difference, as far as quality. Just different uses. The Pro stuff is often in bulk, often can be applied by rotary, may be body shop safe, a few speacial situation kind of products. The Consumer Line is more for people working at home, by hand or DA, smaller quantities, for general detailing.

Re: Is there a recommended product "pairing"?

Ok. I forgot to mention. Last year I waxed the Corvette with NXT 2.0. What do I need to do if I want to switch over to Ultimate wax? I have the full ultimate line here at my house, but haven't used it yet. Do I need to apply Ult. Polish and then the wax? Or can I just apply the Ultimate wax over top of the NXT 2.0? (or neither) The car has been washed twice since the wax was applied.

Thanks for your help! Based on your 16,000 + posts I trust what your saying!!

Re: Is there a recommended product "pairing"?

If you wash/QD the car to make sure the surface is clean, then you could just wax over top.

If you feel the surface could be cleaner, or have not used a polish at all before, then Ult. Polish then Wax would be good.

If it stays that clean and garaged, you may also like the Ult. Quick Wax to use in the future after a wash/qd, when you have a good base of wax on the car.

                  Great! Good info.
Does it matter if I use Ult Quick Detailer or the regular quick detailer? I usually just use the regular for claying.
Is ultimate quick detailer ok before waxing?

Re: Is there a recommended product "pairing"?

You would only want the regular for claying.

UQD would be ok before waxing, though a bit of a waste.
