Need some Help remembering how to Buff

Back in 09 I did the works, M105/205..etc. My Black car has gotten some light swirling so I created a test spot on my trunk and came out with M205 on an LC CCS Orange Pad. I started working on my car but it appears the M205 from 09 isn't spreading right and is drying out too soon. (Car was Washed and Clayed)

I went to go buy some swirlX but all I could find from three different stores was UC so I bought that and went down to a White LC CCS Pad. And did a test spot with it, I did a simple two pass alternating pattern 50% overlap and on the last pass just the weight of the Orbital.

From the side it looks better but if I look at it with a bright light it made it look very foggy.


What am I doing wrong? I am going to buy some SwirlX when the stores open tomorrow.

I think UC also might be too abrasive to finish well on a dark color?

Base on my knowledge, most compounds need further step to refine with products such as m205 or UP and a finishing pad.

Think of Ult Compound as a kissin' cousin of 105., and Ult Polish as 205. Both of these Ult products are derived from 105 and 205.

So I picked up some SwirlX and put it on a white pad. It totally destroyed my trunk lid I am not sure what I am doing wrong

2 Passes, 1 pass with the weight of the orbital, the surface is cool....Speed 5 on my G110. Doing exactly what I did with my M205 test spot which came out great.

M105 and M205 are made to go hand in hand. I would maybe guess that you didn't work them into the paint long enough. Are you just using your DA or are you using both DA and orbital? If you area applying SwirlX i don't think you need to be using it at speed 5.

M105/205 was done in 09. I am simply trying to do minor correction with swirlX and the above is happening

You've mentioned using an orbital and a G110 - are you just mixing terms for the same tool or are you using two different tools?


You said you wanted to remove some light swirling and that's about it, right? In the last two pictures there doesn't appear to be any swirls any more but, unfortunately, it looks like they've been replaced with some pretty decent marring from your buffing process. Can you please confirm that this is, indeed, what we're seeing? If so, that would tell us that you've managed to remove the light swirls but you're just not getting the clarity you want.

So, how to get that clarity? First off, put away the aggressive pads and get to a finishing pad. Your first go 'round with M205 and the LC orange pad was an odd pairing as that's a pretty aggressive pad while M205 is a very fine finishing polish. It is very possible that the pad was overly aggressive and created a lot of the marring you're seeing. That doesn't make it a bad pad, and we're not taking a shot at LC here - it's actually a very nice pad, but if it's not the right product choice for the job you can't expect it to do something it's not designed for. Also, you're M205 from a few years ago should still be perfectly fine, as long as it has been subjected to any prolonged temperature extremes. I've got product much older than this at home and it's still just as good as new, and I leave it out in the garage year round - no, it doesn't get all that cold here in SoCal (a few nights in the low/mid 30s) but it does get pretty hot. Anyway..... just shake that bottle of M205 really well before using it, and then put it on a finishing pad, like our W9207 Soft Buff 2.0 black finishing pad, or an LC black or red pad. Set your G110 to speed 4 and use just moderate pressure, moving the tool slowly over the paint in a 2' x 2' test spot, working the product for several minutes, or until it appears very thin and slightly oily on the surface. Wipe off the excess and see where you're at. If that clears things up, then great - carry on! If not, grab a picture and come on back here and let's regroup.
