  • Claying & Water

I believe I've read where you can use soapy water as a clay lube. If this is true, after washing and final rinse, how dry does the car have to be before spraying on a lube. I use Last touch.
    Thanks

    Re: Claying & Water

I have a really neglected car, I'll use a very weak solution of APC or Simple Green, about 1/2 oz. per quart, just enough to so the water has no surface tension, but not enough that the clay deteriorates. I use the solution very liberally, constantly flushing the contaminants away from the work area. You can start work immediately after washing & rinsing; No need to dry first.

You can use car wash soap as lube. Save some frim your wash bucket before you begin washing. Some clay bars don't work with wash lube. I have had success with mothers clay bar. Never tried meguiars claybar

I clay while the car is still fairly wet, and just get the panel lubed up with either last touch or some car wash solution from the bucket. I know some people say soap will break down the clay, but I've never seen that happen (I use mothers clay).

^ I have a bunch of yellow Mothers clay, and I noticed my clay breaking down too when i used some megs wash soap & water. It did not happen when I used the Mothers showtime detailer with the clay
The water here in Vancouver is pretty soft so I'm pretty sure the wash soap has an effect on clay life. I know some people use ONR as a lube...

The previous time I was using abit of car wash soup + water to clay the car, the clay started to break down fairly quick (bits and pieces coming out). So I decided to use a QD to detail from then. Meguairs Clay and QD.

Same here - used water only - dumb. Scratched the heck out of the car and broke the clay down, too. It was a mess
Good thing I followed up with polish - worked out nicely. But the clay was done-for!
