Well, I'm also guilty of that! I even used hair shampoo, a lot milder than tide or any powdered laundry detergent, but it did give a decent shine. Maybe the "conditioners" in it also prevented it from drying up the paint.
I did wax one of our cars way back without removing the dirt from the paint, and used the wax as a tar remover. It was a cleaner wax anyway, and a cheap one.
