  • M105 with DA and other newb questions

Total newb, here. just dropped $400 on an arsenal of Meguiars gear, buckets, grit guard, towels, nozzle, etc. The bulk of my stash came as part of this bundle: http://www.autodetailingsolutions.net/g110-kit-4.html

Anyway, all of the stuff arrived today and I spent some time reading through the directions and watching youtube videos. After all of that, here's where I'm confused:
    • The M105 is intended to be used with a W-5000 wool pad and a rotary tool, not a DA. (Why, then, is ADS bundling with the DA? Hmm.) Oh, well, I just ordered a W-5000 on ebay for $23. While I gather the results won't be as good as with a rotary tool, I'm not going down that road. Can I expect that the wool pad on the DA with M105 will yield results at least as good as UC with foam? Kinda wishing I chose a different bundle, now...
    • Microfiber 7" bonnets. My bundle came with two of them. What do I use these for? Put over a clean/dry pad and use to wipe off polish/wax instead of by hand?
    • I bought Flagship cleaner/wax and Flagship wax. After reading the packaging, perhaps I only needed one or the other. Would it be overkill to use the cleaner/wax followed by the wax?

4 days of rain in the forecast, so I have some time to digest all of this before I dive in.

BTW, I'm really impressed with the quality of the DA. Nice tool for the modest price tag, and the free bag is a very nice touch. It's also REALLY GREAT to see "Made in USA" proudly stamped on so many of Meguiars products. Kudos!

Re: M105 with DA and other newb questions

    1. No wool pad on a DA. Yes, the DA can be used with #105, just use the foam polishing pad. It just isnt quite as user friendly as some other products.

    2. Yes, removing wax. Put them over a clean pad, preferably cutting, other wise polishing.

    3. Are the flagship products for a boat I hope? The Cleaner/Wax followed by a Wax is a good mild detail.

    - Be sure to try the DA out... there have been a random one or two that dont work unfortunately. OF course my older one has lasted for years.... So one in a million dont work, but dont want it to be you right when you are ready to go.

Murr, excellent advice in so many different things in life!!! Make sure it works before you need it.

Bah, should have posted before buying the wool pad... that will go right back up on ebay when I get it.

Thanks for the answers! (And, yes, the Flagship products are for my boat. Should I use a polishing pad for the clean, and finishing pad for the wax?)

The DA turns on and it's the v2 (looks like the addressed a sometimes faulty power cord in the second version), so I think I'm good to go.

Yeah, those pads will work for the boat. Can even go cutting pad for the cleaning step on a gel coat, but can stay with polishing if things are in good shape.

You don't really need 105 with a DA, as UC is a miracle compound for sure, with far less dusting, longer working times and nearly the same result as 105.

M105 is a very strong cutting product, It is better to start with uc and then move up to m105 if the defects are not removed

                Always remember this advice:
"Go from the least aggresive, to the most aggresive product."

-M105 can be used with DA, use a Polishing Pad (The Yellow one).
-Flagship are meant to be used in boats, but if you have a Fiberglass surface with paint and CC on it, use it
-And the most important thing to keep in mind about ur polisher is "Always clean it after every use."

                Thanks, hope it helps.

As others have said, keep that wool pad off the DA!!! It will mar the heck out of the paint and you'll be really unhappy with the appearance. You won't do any permanent damage, you'll just make a whole lot of extra work for yourself and you'll most likely scare the heck out of yourself in the process! There's just no good reason to do either of those things.

M105 was originally developed for use with a wool pad on a rotary for removing sanding marks from fresh paint. It proved itself to be incredibly effective on a DA for fast defect removal while still leaving a very nice finish that could be easily refined with a finishing polish and a very soft foam pad. Ultimate Compound is derived from M105 but when used on a DA it won't create anywhere near the level of dust, it will give you a much longer buffing cycle, it will wipe off easier, and it can still remove a huge variety of defects. This is our go-to product for our Saturday Classes, and in the 3-1/2 years that it's been out we've had just 2 classes where we needed to step up to something more aggressive to correct the car. That's a pretty darn good track record!
