deep scratch on rear plastic bumper

    deep scratch on rear plastic bumper

    Hey everyone,

    I'm a big meguiar's fan and have been using many of the products over the years.

    Recently I got a big scratch on the left side of my plastic bumper (please see photo below)
    The scratch is pretty deep and I was looking up online to see what the best possible course of action would be. I know that it would require touchup paint.

    I saw this appliedcolors for around $50 online, that seemed like it might do the job.

    This required no sanding, so I wasn't sure if it was legitimate since most of the scratch repair products required sanding.

    I also looked into DR COLORCHIP, but it seemed like that was made for road rock chips, and not very serious deep scratches like mine.

    You can get a bondo small dent repair kit for around $17.00. There is enough filler, glaze and sandpaper to readily build up the scratch flush to the surface of the surrounding paint. Once flush, treat the filler/glaze with primer. You can get a small tube of primer with built in brush (duplicolor) at most auto stores. Once that is dry you're ready for touch up paint. Build up a couple of coats touch-up or 1 coat touch-up, 1 coat clear coat depending upon the touch up paint system you purchased. For a more pro look wet sand down to even out the touch up paint to surroundings and use compound to remove the sanding marks. Don't wax or seal the repaired area for 30-60 days to allow time for everything to cure. Google scratch repair and you can find a number of articles with pictures for reference. Be sure to tape off most of the surrounding area before you start anything. This will contain any "oops" till you get the hang of it. Good luck! Don't forget to show us the results when you're done.

      The only way to repair paint my friend is to sand off the old and apply new. This has to be done with a superior paint system like "Matrix" or "PPG" to get a desired match. The paint application must be done with a quality HVLP paint gun by someone who has experience with todays paint's and techniques. You do not want to use Bondo because it will crack, trust me it will. You don't want to waste your money on a Touch up kit from some clown on the internet. Paint must be atomized not brushed. Unless you drive a $1,000 car I would call a Bumper Repair company to do it. I used Express Bumper Repair in San Antonio and they did a great job. Maybe there's one near you...

        We'd call this one a gouge and not just a scratch. Unless you are incredibly skilled at spot repair this is not going to be an easy repair if you want the repair to be invisible. This one is really better left to a professional.

          I just put two gouges like the one shown in the photo in my bumper.

          In our town all I can find is auto body repair shops. No listings for bumper repair service.

          So what should I expect the auto body shops want or only be willing to do to fix it.

            After more thought about the cost of the repair - I might just be left with a "touch-up."

            I know it will not be pretty. But it should look better than the gouges exposing the white facia against the black color of the auto body.



            So with that said does any one have any suggestions on how to make a not-so pretty repair with a Dupli-color product????



            I am concerned that the primer will not stick to the facia - may be sand the facia before I put on the primer???

              Just my opinion, even if i had some touch-up product like ones mentioned here, I would still consider them something short term or subject to a decision on whether or not to have it repainted. If you successfully touched up the panel/bumper, etc., meaning did a really good job at making it hardly noticeable, then I may leave it that way. But sometimes it can bug me knowing that the bumper still has a gouge and that the touch-up is still not a complete process, I may still have it repainted.

                I would like to repaint the bumper but do not have the money and not sure if/when I will.


                Suggestions on touch-up beginning with facia would really be appreciated.

                  Ok, if the gouges are small, touch-up paint may be sufficient. Just make sure to use as little paint as possible, and depending on the depth you may not even need to do a thorough sanding. Just clean the area well, alcohol or something similar applied to the scratches to remove any oils, dirt or grime that can affect the bonding of the paint to the bumper. I would also mask the edges of the scratch to make sure only the deep scratch will get paint, and use a very fine paint brush, after the paint has been applied leave it for several hours maybe even at least 1 day, the longer it cures the better. If applied properly, you may not even need to sand or compound the area.

                        It can work, no one wants to reach that point where frustration sets in because tips and advices didn't work. I don't think it will come to that point, but no wax or sealant can protect any car from that
