  • Paint protection?

Hey guys I was looking at some local ads for professional paint correction/polish/work and i see a few different places advetising a "paint protection" package , I am curious how this is a different procedure then waxing and where i can purchase supplies to do my own "paint protection" package

    Thanks in advance , Fred

If your talking about alp the steps, then your local auto store such as O'Rileys or Auto Zone would have everything you need.

    Your wash soap.
    A clay kit
Ultimate Compound to remove swirls etc...
    Ultimate Polish
    Ultimate wax.

Also, if your just talking about what to use to "protect" your paint longer than a wax would, I believe you would want to use a product such as OptiSeal, although I do not think you can buy that in stores. Your best bet would be online.

The CarPro products are also more of the new paint protection products.

But if the ads you are looking at are just like the car dealership packages, then no, they arent legitimate.

Does the 5-step paint protection needed to be done all in one day? Or I could wash and clay; then use the car and then polish and wax after a few days (would wash to clean the surface prior to these).

It depens: on your area wheather

Here the Volcan ashes bring an unknow contaminant that also seems to get staked on plastic moldings so I has to re clay my car even after just one week so a post inspection is highly recomendable.

You also may avoid parking under trees for example; Im not sure about allkind of trees but in my urban area are these called "truenos" that leave a heavy sticky contaminant really hard to get rid of . I would do all the work at once.

I guess to skip 1-2 days is fine in this time of year. Later in the summer, the wind can carry the tree sap and deposit them to your car. They solidify quickly under the sun and they are not easy to remove without wax protection.

Be careful and watch the car closely, without wax protection, a nasty bird dropping may etch into the painted surface in a few hours.

+1 I guess birds in my neighborhood love spicy foods. These are really something you need to take care of ASAP.

                Thanks for the inputs.
By the way, do I need to use Ultimate Polish in between; if I have light colored car (white / silver). I would use clay and then wax...

                  Has your car been well-maintained?

I have a silver car as well and my car is well-maintained over the years. I have modified my 5-step program to: WASH - CLAY - ULTIMATE COMPOUND - WAX - WAX. The 2nd wax step is applied the next day (or at least a few hrs) after the cure time.

Please note that I do this complete 5-step only once a year. For the rest of the time, I do WASH every week and WASH - WAX every 3-4 weeks.

                    Re: Paint protection?

I haven't waxed since I got it 2 years ago, but I always wash every week with only water especially during winter season. The paint is shiny, I never thought that plain water has kept it shiny. Now that I have meguiar's products, I plan to wash, clay and then wax. Do I really need the ultimate compound and polish after claying? I could only feel surface contaminants especially the small brake dusts (orange/rusts spots). Do I really need to use UC and UP before waxing?

In your WAX - WAX step? Do you use both paste or quick/spray wax?

                      Re: Paint protection?

Since you haven't wax for 2 years, there is probably no wax left on your car so the general 5-step program is what you need for your car. The purpose of Ultimate Compund is to make paint corrections, to remove light scratches and other contaminates. Ultimate Polish will add shine to your silver car.

Don't mix up wax and quick wax. Quick and spray waxes, contain small amount of wax, are supposed to be used only to enhence the shine between washes. I myself like liquid wax like NXT-Liquid and Ultimate Wax-Liquid. When I said WAX - WAX, I was talking about 2 layers of real wax.

One thing I like to point out is the success of your detailing job depends mainly on the preparations. Wash, Clay, Ultimate Compound, Ultimate Polish are all preparation steps.

Allways do the test spot. It will save you serveral hrs.

For maintaining i would do the following

Wash. Summertime early morning or early evening to avoid waterspots.
Clay once a year. Car does not have to be dry.
                        Ultimate polish
                        Wax
                        Wax

Only use ult compound for removing scrathes

mis3 and goldenlight, thanks a lot for your inputs.
For the Wax and Wax, I would apply the 2nd wax like mis3 did, at most the next day of curing time.

If you're using a full synthetic like NXT 2.0 or Ultimate Wax then ideally you should wait 12 hours between applications. It is not absolutely necessary, but if you can manage it you should.

Any quick detail spray, from Quik Detailer in the burgundy bottle to UQD or anything in our pro line, should be used between washes to remove light dust and fingerprints. When done correctly, with a couple of clean microfiber towels, you can use it as a daily wipe down regimen to keep a car looking clean and fresh for a long period of time. If you've driven in the rain or haven't wiped down the car for several days, then a QD spray is no longer recommended as the finish is too dirty. At that point it's time either for Ultimate Wash & Wax Anywhere or a full traditional wash.
