  • Ultimate Black - is it as bad as this guy says ?

    Hi all,

I was thinking about trying some ultimate black on my exterior trim (black plastics bits) as they have gone a bit grey-ish and dull over time

I saw this review on youtube where someone was having issues with a waxy residue..

Is this a common problem with this product or was this guy just using it wrong ? I don't want to create a bigger problem by trying to fix a small one...

My guess is that the surface was not cleaned of previous treatments and the UB product never soaked in to the surface. I've never had that type of problem with any of the Meg's dressings that I've used.

When using Ultimate Black, the best advice I can offer is to clean the areas to be treated ( dish soap and water ) and when applying the product keep this in mind, LESS IS MORE. Do not over treat the plastic, more is not better. Less product and rub more to get even coverage. I find that the area treated will dry quickly and will not collect dust. I also find that the area treated will not always look the way you wish on the first application, however , by the third time it is wonderful. My $0.02 worth.

Judging from the video, I would guess he had actual wax, past products or simply road grime on there and tried applying the Ultimate Black over it and is now blaming the new product for what was already there. Ultimate Black contains nothing that looks or acts remotely like what he described.

This is a pretty sketchy video not shore what he had on there to rub it off with his finger nail.

Meguiars wont put out a product if it does not work correctly so when people have bad things to say about a product obviously it is them using it wrong. Furthermore, the brush he was using I would never put on my car, he also was drying with a bath towel and was spraying windex on the plastic and he spelled Meguiars as 'Meguairers'.

                Think I'd ignore the video.
who cleans their car with a broom, then grabs a towel from his bathroom.
He dried the plastic and then spread the alleged wax onto the door.
                i think there's cross-contamination from previous washes.

We can all blame a product for not working how we want it to, but it does come down to the 6 P's... Proper Preperation Prevents P$$$ Poor Performance.

Obviously applied way too much product, a bit laughable the way it was reviewed. That so-called residue from ultimate black only occurs when thick layers are applied. I've seen this residue on the cap, where sometimes there's leftover product on the lid, which seems to look and feel like white glue. But on black moulding, i have never had the same issues, none like what this detailer had.

Ultimate Black and Ultimate Protectant are both good products..
