  • Are you familiar with this product?

A potential customer called me up and asked me what i thought of "5 Star Shine". They claim alot of big things usine ions to protect. Not being a chemist this all sounds like a load of ****. Maybe im wrong and this is the greatest product on the market but im skeptical.

Looks like a polymer sealant to me or something with silicone. I'm sure if there were something that protects your paint for 5 years meguiars would have developed it or something like it.

Product would not move so fast = Less profit. Consumerism 101.

Thanks for your unhelpful waste of my time comment. I was just pointing out that a large car care company would probably have something like that as a product available at a higher cost to make up for the lack of sales.

If something sounds to good to be true, it probably is to good to be true. Next thing they might say is that it contains positively charged electrons to repel dust, etc. I remember reading that long ago (sounds like anti-matter!)

My apologies if I hit a nerve.

Optimum's Opti-Coat bonds permanently to paint, and requires abrasive action to wear away (similar to paint). It's been around for several years, and there are multiple reports of it living up, so far, to the product claims.

Re: Are you familiar with this product?

There are several "dealer applied sealants" and other, similar products that claim to last for 5 years or even longer. These tend to be attractive to people who have zero interest in actually doing anything beneficial to their car's finish and would rather just not have to deal with it. Then there are products like Opti-Coat, CQuartz and even our own M188 (sold in Asia only) that will last far, far longer than any wax or sealant and require rotary compounding to remove. But even these are not totally impervious to scratching, swirls, etc so if you apply one and then slack off in your washing & drying process, you're still going to accumulate some swirls over time that will need correction. For protection against severe acid rain and industrial fallout, these semi permanent coatings can be wonderful stuff.
