  • Advise on detailing process

This has probably been asked at laeast a couple times, im sure. But I am looking for feedback on my process and ways to make it better as always.
Wash- Megs Gold Class (2 bucket process)
    Clay
    Wash again
Megs Diamond Cut 2.0 w/ red pad (just bought 105 today)
    Megs 205 w/yellow pad
Megs Ultimate Compound w/ yellow pad
Megs #7 Glaze w/ tan pad
Megs Ultimate Wax w/ tan pad (bought hi-tech yellow wax today)

I use a PC 7424 and microfiber rags/mitts for everything. I remove one product before moving to the next, but i have seen people simply change pad/product with cutting compounds before, then wipe off before polishing. Any advantage to that, besides saving time? Also I am looking to eliminate the Ultimate line from my process, is there another finer polish you guys reccommend in the pro line between the 205 and Glaze? Thanks guys!

    Re: Advise on detailing process

    Hi Nate,

Ultimate Compound is more aggressive than M205 so if you're going to use this, you have to use it before the M205 step. Also, UC is a compound like M105. The difference between the two is that M105 is more aggressive, body shop safe and can be used with a rotary. Sounds like your car is well maintained anyway so I would say that M105 might be overkill. Ultimate Compound works wonders so I'd stick with that. In addition, you're using a D/A so UC will fit perfectly.

Also, I never wash after claying. IMO, I think you're wasting time in this step. That's still up to you but I never do it.

Why are you looking to eliminate the ultimate line from your process? Ultimate products are GREAT! Just because they're consumer products doesn't mean they'll under perform. If I had to do it all over again, I'd buy Ultimate Compound over M105.

A product in between M205 and show car glaze will be something like Ultimate Polish.

Here's the process I would do:
    1. Wash
    2. Clay
    3. Wash again (optional)
    4. Ultimate Compound with yellow polishing pad
    5. M205 with black finishing pad
    6. M07 show car glaze with black finishing pad (optional)
    7. Ultimate Wax

The reason why I say M07 is optional is because M205 is rich in polishing oils that it can finish out your paint quite nicely!

      1. Wash
      2. Clay - No need to wash after
      3. Clean - #105 would be the better option. Ult. Compound may be the even better option. You will want a polishing pad, not cutting.
      4. Clean/Polish - #205 would be the milder follow up.
      5. Polish - #7 is a good pure polish. However, not sure if you will see much difference after #205. You can always do a test panel, and then check. If no difference, just stop there.
      6. Wax
      7. Wax - 2 thin coats are best, whichever you choose.

It would be best to change to a new pad, if going from a strong product to a mild one.

No, nothing milder in the Pro lines, and as mentioned, not sure if you will see much other difference with a pure polish. Why removing the Ult. Line, they all work well together? And Ult. Polish would be a step inbetween #205 and #7.

      EDIT:

Hmm, didnt even notice the UC out of order there...

Dont get me wrong, I love the Ult. line, always had good results with it. Im going to change up my process a little bit thanks to you guys. Ill keep on with the UC, maybe add in the UP. My wifes new car needs some attention (2012 Jeep Liberty Artic, dark grey) so ill play with it a little this weekend. Do you guys prefer to hand apply wax or use a machine?

          Re: Advise on detailing process

Definitely a machine. It makes it a lot easier and faster to apply. In addition, you'll get a much more even and thinner coverage.

Completely agree with Marc & Murr....

I would skip the wash AFTER claying - better to spend your energy polishing

I find UC much more user friendly than 105 - UC has longer working time and dusts MUCH less than 105.
IMHO - with a D/A, UC can almost perform as much paint correction as 105. If you're talking about a rotary.... 105

I prefer #7 for Single Stage paint and UP for Clear Coat paint.
