  • Body shop royally screwed up my paint

I posted a thread on here a couple weeks ago about reveiving some hail damage to my black 2011 Jeep Wrangler. I dropped it off at a body shop last week and they did PDR on a few places but insurance replaced my hood.

Today I picked it up and upon arriving home I inspected it.

    1. The new hood with the fresh paint job is so full of swirls and holograms. It looks like they went crazy with the buffer.

    2. The rest of my Jeep is covered in swirls too from where they apparently wiped it down before doing PDR.

I am just livid. I pretty well had maintained the black paint to perfection up to this point. All those countless hours put into maintaining a swirl free and shiny paint were wiped out in one trip to the body shop. A brand new hood with a fresh paint job looks like complete ****.

I specifically asked them not to wash my Jeep (as I feared this would happen). I thought about calling them or taking it back, but if they couldn't do it right the first time then obviously they know nothing about caring for paint and I will not trust them to get it right the second time.

After work today, I started work on removing the swirls from the rest of the body but I did not touch the hood because I am not sure what products I can safely use on a fresh paint job. I know wax is out of the question for 30 days, but is there anything I can do to at least minimize the swirls and holograms in the hood before the 30 days? It is driving me nuts.

You can use all of the cleaner and polish products, and may want to clay also. Just no waxes.

Sorry for your troubles, I would be livid too. I would just wait 60 days and then go to town with any product you want.

Hi, sorry to hear of your woes.

I work for a classic car garage and we have issues with paintshops sending cars back to us with exactly the same issues (usually dark coloured cars).

It makes me so angry as it takes considerable time to rectify this (the one paintshop told my manager 'just get your guy to polish it out!!!!')

I can't imagine how I would feel if it were my own car.

Unfortunately, in most cases, when a body shop is doing insurance work they aren't getting paid enough to spend the time needed to fully detail a car - and that's not really their job. As long as the paint job itself is of high quality - no fisheyes, no crazy texture that is grossly mismatched to the factory level of orange peel, no sanding marks, no poor masking, no serious overspray - then most people wouldn't know the difference. And the insurance company certainly isn't paying for it. Now, the insurance company may be interested in hearing of your displeasure with the whole experience, but if it's swirls and holograms that are the cause for the complaint, it probably won't carry much weight with them as this is fairly standard practice. Unfortunate as it may be. Certainly some shops are better than others in this regard, but they are paid to replace damaged panels, and apply paint that matches the rest of the car with regard to color matching and, well, not much else, really.

So that leaves you with having to finish the job, which doesn't seem right, fair, or even moral or legal - we get that, and we feel your pain. But at least you know how to take care of it. The fresh respray has already been compounded, as evidence by the holograms on the hood, so that should tell you that you can go at it again with your DA and the appropriate liquids to set it right. Yep, you can start buffing on that right now if you'd like - the body shop already has. M80 may be all it takes, or you may need Ultimate Compound. And you can go crazy with M07 after that if you like. Just don't wax it yet.
