  • Waxing Windows

Years ago I once waxed the front windshield of my car. The first time it rained, the windshield smeared all over the place when I turned on my wipers. For this reason, I quit waxing my windshield and only waxed the other windows.

Now, this was a long time ago and it was carnuba wax that would smear whit the windshield wipers. Here is my question, will the synthetic sealants do the same thing, or will they be smear free? Has anybody else done this before?

I ask this because Rain-X is a PITA to apply and I hate it.

I have used Klasse AIO and Collinite 476 on my windshield with success. Neither one has any polishing oils to speak of. I have also used Ultimate Quik Wax with no issues. I think the polishing oils would be the main culprit for smearing.

If RainX is hard, you are doing it wrong.

But on your main question, it really seems to depend on the glass, wipers, and wax. One person will have something smear, and another person wont. All you can do is try if you want to.

I use UQW and UQD on top of RainX all the time, with no issues. So if you want to try something, those would seem to be good starting points, and see how it goes.

        I hate windshield wipers!
I've used Rain-X since the mid 70's, long before it was available everywhere. Last fall I tried a product called Aquapel, a similar product that lasts for months, not weeks. After a PA winter on my DD, it still makes wipers unnecessary at 40 mph or above.

I used M26 when I waxed my car the first time and used M26 followed by UW liquid the second time. Both times I did all glass, including windshield. I found if there's any smearing when the wax is applied to the glass, there's something on the glass that needs to be cleaned off, This past application, I had no smearing on application, looked like the rest of the car. Never had any issues with the wipers. I do clean the glass once after waxing with IG, maybe that makes a difference.

I use Opti-Seal and Ultimate Quik Wax in place of rain repellants. I have found that sealants tend to do better than waxes on the windshield with regards to smearing and wiper judder.

I have used NXT and UQW on my windshield with no issues at all.

I hate RainX also. I use M16 on the windshield and rarely even have to put the wipers on. M16 is difficult if not impossible to find now, so I expect NXT would work as davey g suggests.

I applied synthetic sealant on my front windscreen without any problem. But applied M16 it made my wiper judder.

Many of the issues stated are precisely why we do not recommend waxing your windshield. It sounds as though those who have had the most success did the most prep, as well.
