  • Wax applicator

    Dear all,

I tried using the foam pad that came with the Carnuba Plus to apply wax on my car but some of the liquid wax applied to the pad seeped through to the other side. Seems like a waste to me that not all the wax was got onto the car. I would appreciate it if you could recommend a better alternative.

    Thanks

    Re: Wax applicator

Meguiars also have microfiber applicators, but personally i haven't had any real issues with their foam applicators which i actually like because it feels a lot more dense than the other foam applicators I've used before. But lately yes, I had some product seeping through (nxt 2) but this is mainly due to the applicator being a bit tired already and maybe me putting too much on the applicator. What i did to solve it is to just try to kiss the finish to get every drop of wax onto the paint.

Sounds like you may have been using a lot of wax for it to soak through that far.

This really sounds like you were using way too much wax, which is a very common mistake. A very little bit goes a long, long way and all you really need to cover a full sized car is an ounce or two of product. We once had someone at a Thursday Night Open Garage who was applying wax so heavy that he'd saturated the little foam pad and we could literally squeeze excess product out of the pad - not good. We then handed the pad to his girlfriend and, after showing her what a thin coat of wax looks like, had her wax the whole other side of the car without adding any more product to the pad. She do so quite easily, and there was probably still enough wax to cover another entire car.

Look at this thread - How to apply a very thin coat of wax with a G110v2. While it shows application done with a DA buffer rather than by hand, the exact same concept works with the small foam pad and hand application. Remember, only so much wax/sealant will bond to the paint, so anything excess is what dries to a haze and is then wiped off and basically thrown away. Applying a wax heavy only causes it to take longer to dry, it's harder to remove, and you're just wasting product. Thin is the way to go - if you think you're putting the wax on a bit heavy, odds are you are.

Maybe the mentality should be "If you can see the product on the paint, you may have applied it just a bit thick" even now, i'm still trying to master appling wax as thin as i can, trying to apply it as thin as with applying it with a g110v2 but obviously for me it's almost impossible. There is a level of satisfaction in being able to apply a coat of wax thinly, you just know it's the correct way and it is a lot less messier and removal is a lot easier

Youtube has a couple of meguiars demos on wax application. You can see how little product was used. You can barely see any on the paint
