  • Ultimate Liquid Wax: How much is enough?

For my own purposes and curiosity, I have decided to compare GC Carnauba to ULW on my trunk. I applied both products today and it was very hard to even see the ULW, granted, I was in poor lighting. When wiping it off, I didn't feel the wax in the way that I could feel the GC Carnauba.
I used 3 small-medium sized dots on an applicator pad to do half of the top of the trunk, and about 4-5 medium sized dots of GC Carnauba on the other side.

    How much ULW is appropriate?

Sounds about right, though dots arent a scientific measurement.

I try to get the pad/applicator to have a bit of a coating of wax across it when starting off (may be a bit of a waste for just your test). Then other panels will just take a few drops, or a small line each.

The first little bit of product you put on the pad will tend to be absorbed more. Then you'll need less and less as you go as the pad gets more in it.

I just asked a similar question to this about a week ago. I used ULW with a foam applicator pad, used a few dots just like you did.

My problem was I could barley see wax when I was rubbing it on. By the time I finished applying it to a side of the van I was detailing, it almost looked as if the little bit of ULW that was on there simply vanished! In other words, I had nearly nothing to wipe off.

So to answer your question, you don't really need much at all. That's what I was told by multiple people on here. Your amount you're using is actually probably correct.

I think you're doing ok, remember ULW and Gold class are 2 very different waxes. Ultimate is a newer technology that applies real thin especially the liquid version. there really shouldn't be anything wrong with applying a product extremely thin, it only makes removal/hazing faster and easier. Maybe that's why you didn't feel the ULW upon removal since you applied a good thin coat

That was exactly my experience. I had saw it when putting it on, but only slightly. When I went to wipe it off, I didn't see it anymore and thought that I might have imagined seeing it in the first place.
We will see if it was enough next rainfall.

The lack of "feel" when wiping off ULW, especially when directly compared to Gold Class, is due to the lack of any true hazing over of the product. When GC dries you get a dry haze, albeit a pretty light one. Still, you can feel that as a drag on the towel when wiping off the product, and this is true of virtually any product that dries to a haze. Ultimate Wax uses what we call "thin film technology" and given your experience, we think you can understand why we call it that.

It is interesting that you chose to use 30-60% more Gold Class than Ultimate in your test (4-5 drops vs 3), and that's certainly going to account for a difference in feel as well. But that should be enough, provided you could see where you were applying it as you spread it over the trunk lid, even if it was just a barely noticeable film.

I must admit I like the "Feel" of removing hazed wax. These new liquid waxes (or any type of wax) that just wipe off easily makes me think it will not last very long. Frankly I enjoy the minimal effort in taking off M16. It is not much of a chore if applied thinly. So none of these new fangled waxes for me, but then again I still have a rotary telephone. I might try that ULW if I see it in the store. Might be good for quick detailing over my M16 when needed.
