There was a thread started by (I think) scottwax with links to tons of Youtube videos on how to car wash using ONR, remove swirls, etc.. See if you can find it - I highly recommend it. If I find it, I will post a link here.

And you won't. In fact, if you stick with this for a year or two, or 10 or 20 years, you'll still be learning all the time. It's the guys who stop learning, or refuse to learn anymore, that we worry about.

The threads below should answer a lot of your questions, though. Feel free to ask a question if something you find in these isn't clear - that's what we're here for.

Garage Troll, thanks for the kind words, but I was most definitely NOT born with a buffer in my hands! As a teenager my first car was often washed with dish soap and an old beach towel. I've made all the same mistakes that everyone else has made, and maybe a few more! OK, OK...... maybe a lot more!! But I've repented.... or there was an intervention..... or something.

You're welcome Mike and you deserve it! While I've never washed my car with dish soap I have made quite a few oops. Remember a couple years ago when I tried to wet sand that spot on my hood? That was a $400 mistake! LOL

Compound would be the product containing the abrasives that make it possible to remove below surface defects like swirls, etchings, stains, etc. Polish, in the sense of a pure polish like M07 or Deep Crystal Polish, contains zero abrasives and therefore it can not remove defects, but it can add a lot of gloss and beauty to the surface. A cleaner/polish is a bit of a hybrid in that it contains some fine abrasives and a lot of polishing oils, a combination that allows it to remove some very fine defects, or most commonly to refine the surface following use of a compound. Cleaner/polishes include M80, M205 and Ultimate Polish, among others.

In a full process the order of use would be:
                  • Wash - to remove loose contaminants from the surface
                  • Clay - to remove bonded contaminants from the surface
                  • Paint cleaner or Compound - to remove below surface defects
                  • Polish - to add gloss (pure polish) or further refine the surface (cleaner/polish)
                  • Wax - to protect all the gloss you created in the previous steps
                  • Maintain - the frequent removal of loose contaminants before they've had a chance to bond to the surface; accomplished via the use of quick detailer sprays
