  • OQW after UQD

I had no choice but to use a touchless car wash earlier today. It did a terrible job but after UQD, the car is OK now.

Is it beneficial to apply UQW now? Or maybe I should have used UQW instead of UQD before. My car is silver.

UQD (or other qd product) would be the right product to remove any residue from the wash.

UQW would be fine to use now. Kind of expensive to use UQD and cover it up, but maybe can plan it out next time to use QD or something.

I've frequently followed UQD (or M135) with UQW (or D156). No issues.

Did you see all noticeable difference before and after the UQW?

In my situation before, the car went through a car wash and was somewhat clean. Would you go directly to UQW?

I frequently need to run my car through the touchless wash during winter weather and this doesn't remove all the dirt. The UQD takes off the remaining dirt and makes the car clean enough to for the UQW. I notice the slickness return after UQW and this makes the car easier to clean next week.

When the car is just slightly dirty, I use UQD followed by UQW. It's so fast and easy, I can see no read not to do this. I use UQW on everything, vinyl trim, glass and stainless steel/chrome. UQW is, IMO, one of Meguiar's most versatile products.

Are you referring to those car washes you drive through sitting in the car?

Yes, the touchless carwash I use is one that you stay in the car and the machine goes around and uses pulsating high pressure and soap to clean then runs a high speed blower to dry the car. The winter weather in WI is nasty and I don't have a heated garage.

I don't believe I have seen those where I live.
I like that idea, I'll look around for them.

My understanding is although these touchless car washes will not create swirls, they use very harsh detergent that will strip more wax than regular car shampoo. Also, they usually do not do a good job.

You have to decide on the worse of 2 evils.

While that is true to a point, as you stated, you have to choose between the lesser of the two evils. The fact that he's removing most of the salt and grime and then putting at least some sort of protection down is ultimately the key in my opinion. Given the choice between a touchless and not washing my car I would choose the touchless. I feel that the salts and chemicals on the road would be worse for the finish.

Here in SoCal this type of car wash is most commonly found at a gas station, and quite often there you can actually pay for the wash at the pump where you're given a code number - you then drive around to the wash, enter the code number and pull in.

These washes routinely use a heavy detergent to wash the car, and then spray it with a neutralizing rinse to stop the action of the cleaner. Nothing ever physically touches the paint (other than the detergent and water, of course) so cleaning efficiency isn't as great as when a quality wash mitt is allowed to mechanically remove the dirt, but at least you won't swirl the paint in the process. Drying is via huge blowers, so again nothing is physically contacting the paint. But the downside is that the heavy detergents can be pretty effective at stripping wax, especially if you haven't waxed in a few months and your existing wax is getting pretty thin. And they don't get the car quite as clean as you would at home, but in northern climates during the winter they're better than nothing!

Now, once you've run through one of these washes and you're debating about which product to use to "finish the job", a quick detailer is a better choice than a spray wax. But if you're looking for something that will do both things in one go, and can handle a far greater amount of surface dirt than even a quick detailer can handle safely, then Ultimate Wash & Wax Anywhere is what you want. Yes, it's more expensive than a Ultimate Quik Detailer, but it's less expensive than UQD and UQW combined, and it will clean the surface more thoroughly than UQD and still leave quite a bit of polymer protection behind.
