  • New to detailing, could use some suggestions.

I've recently purchased a Boss 302 Mustang that I'm wishing to go the extra mile to take care of as I fully expect this car to appreciate in value provided I continue to take excellent care of it. It's the competition orange paint with painted gloss black aluminum wheels.

I'll almost certainly be buying some of the detailing clay, but unsure which specific one to be purchasing.

Additionally I'm torn between using the ultimate paste wax or ultimate liquid wax for the primary waxing product. I would assume the liquid wax to be "safer" when it comes to accidentally getting a bit on the black trim that is all over the car?

For the secondary/finish I'm thinking of the polymer sealant, with it's secondary use being to provide an added layer of protection on the wheels against brake dust.

Finally it's been suggested I use a process of a gentle scrub with some simple green to remove any existing brake dust and other grime, rinse off the residue, then apply a layer of a sealant wax (polymer sealant presumably, or would the ultimate quick wax work better in this role?) work it in, allow it to dry, then apply a second coat. Future washes would theoretically be quick gentle scrubs to rinse off brake residue and monthly re-applications of the sealant to keep a protective barrier in place.

Finally any suggestions as to a car washing solution? This is unfortunately an area where I've managed to find no real useful information as yet, as traditionally I've always taken my cars to the high pressure stall car washes, however I don't want to use any such high pressure methods that can theoretically cause the dirt and grime to 'cut' and embed itself into the clear coat, etc.

    1. Wash - Gold Class soap, 2 buckets, Grit Guards, good quality mitts, towels.
    2. Clay - Smooth Surface Clay kit
    3. Clean/Polish - Ult. Polish
    4. Wax - Ult. Liq Wax would be safer for trim. If you are new to detailing, no bad habits either. I think it is old habits that lead to some of the streaking you may here about online. Just apply very thin, and remove with a towel misted with water every so often.
    5. Wax - 2 thin coats are best

That detail would be great for if you have no real defects to remove. If you do, you may need some other products in the cleaning step.

Or for even quicker, you can:

    1. Wash
    2. Clay
    3. ColorX
    4. Wax

    6. Maintain - After future washes, Ult. Quick Wax, or Gold Class Spray Wax are great products to use, or to use while drying.

Excellent, thank you for the suggestions.

I'm assuming that since this is a new car, a polish this early would likely be a bad idea or at least unnecessary unless I see/feel any imperfections on the surface which I intend to look for carefully after the next wash.

Remember Meguiars uses the term polish to mean polishing oils. Some other companies use it to mean a cleaning step with a strong product to remove swirls, etc.

So the Ult. Polish is a very cleaning product with lots of polishing oils in it.

Hmm, so if I'm understanding you correctly Meguiar's polish is less of an abrasive and more of a conditioner when compared to other "polishes"?

Re: New to detailing, could use some suggestions.

Yes, I meant to say "Ult. Polish is a very mild cleaner with a lot of oils"....

And yes, you obvservation is pretty accurate. Meguiars will term things a 'cleaner' or 'compound' that have a cleaning or abrasive quality.

So Ult. Polish is a very mild cleaner/polish.

Deep Crystal Polish or #7 Show Car Glaze are pure polishes, meaning only oils. But they would want soem kind of cleaning step before to get any dirt, old wax, etc off the paint, out of the pores, etc.

So if you just want to clay, and then do a mild cleaning step for removing dirt, leave oils behind, and then wax, the Ult. Polish would be the perfect product.

Re: New to detailing, could use some suggestions.

So in a turn for the inconvenient after a quick wanding at a public car wash I noticed what appears to be some minor wax damage from what I can only assume were rocks kicked up at highway speeds...

Being so new to all this I'm not entirely sure how 'deep' these gouges went, but it definitely looks like it penetrated an outer layer of wax. So at my next opportunity to hand wash (hopefully in a week at most) I definitely plan on claying the car, but for surface gouges like these would something like the UC be what would be required? Or would the polish be sufficient?

Additionally would you advise going over the entirety of the body with UC to ensure that the whole car has been stripped of its dealer layer of wax, then follow it with the polish? Or use one or the other and never both?

It seems like if I were to use the UC I'd want to use the deep crystal polish or #7 afterwards instead of UP since UP is marginally abrasive?

              So in theory:

              Wash
              Clay
              UC and/or UP/#7/DCP (?)
              Wax
              Wait
              Wax

A pic may be best, if possible to get an idea of the scratch.

The damage wont be in the wax, the wax layer isnt that thick, so it is in the paint.

Wash, clay, UP would be fine for a general first detailing. If that one spot needs something stronger, you can just use it in that spot. UC in a spot, then UP everything would be very good.

Taking a second look at everything in a better light and it would appear that my initial impressions were a bit overkill. It would appear that all the spots I was seeing are the result of bug strikes. It's all leftover residue that never got removed from wand-washes (to be expected). So something like a thorough hand wash followed by some clay and UP to gently abrade the residue and water stains that I saw and a fresh coat of wax and I'm sure the car will be back to looking like new.

Pardon the poor photography, these spots were impossibly difficult to really get to appear in any of my images. This is the best one I could get out of the bunch. If you look off to the left side of the picture you can see some of the bug residue I'm talking about.

Hehe, definitely in a week tops after I've done a real good job of cleaning her up, right now even though she's marginally clean, she's still looking a bit dingy and needs some love that I'm just not able to give just yet.

Oops.. just missed the edit deadline it would appear.. on second thought perhaps some before and after pictures would help to show any improvements this coming cleansing, claying, polishing and waxing will make in a more objective light. Behold my presently dirty girl.

You can use the UP first, and wax it up.

If it needs something else next time, or you get some Ult. Compound from the begining to have on your shelf, that is ok too. They wont get worse sitting there.

Excellent that's what I was thinking Murr, a good thorough hand wash and claying, then UP and wax everything a section at a time. I appreciate the continued feedback and suggestions.
