  • New truck - Getting old and tired

My 2012 Ram has just found its way home. It's another white one. I just washed it for the second time. No swirls, no contaminants. Can I get by with going directly to Ultimate Liquid Wax? I'll apply with with a polishing pad on my PC so there should be a bit of "polishing action". I do have just about every Meguiar's product on hand...including ColorX and Ultimate Polish. Thing is, that Ram is one big ol' truck and I am one tired ol' guy.

I would lightly clay it and then apply your ULW.

I considered clay but like I said above there was no sign of contaminants. I ordered the truck. It only took less than two weeks for it to travel from the factory to my dealer. No signs of rail dust. I thought some of using ColorX. That is my "go to" wax to get rid of road grime and minor marring.

          Murr1525,

How did I know that you were going to suggest that process.

I would do as Murr suggested...

BUT if you really want to minimise your work, I would just ColorX this time around, then next time (in month or two) use your ULW.

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

              Tom,
Please view this as a question from a noob, as I've not done a white vehicle, have you tried "polishing action" with Ultimate Wax? Effective?

Have to go with what works.

But really, even though a pad will add some cleaning ability, with how little Ult. Wax is used, and how thin it is spread, I dont think you'll get much cleaning out of it.

I learned from Tuck, M66 is a fine way to jewel a paint prior to your LSP. I use it all the time now. Not sure if ColorX has the same cutting power as M66. It sure makes white paint pop.

OK, Mike Stoops. Time to "rise and shine". I want to get at this today. The truck is 100% clean. No contaminants, no road film or dirt, no rail dust. I'd apply "whatever" with a pc and a polishing pad. I always apply sealants like I would apply a polish...four passes at right angles to each other....with "vigor". Again as far as products, I have them all on hand....including #16.

I've found overworking Ultimate Wax leads to streaking. (Forgive the term overworking. Four passes, for me at least, is overworking UW.) Four passes with other sealants may not present problems. Your experience speaks volumes.

Re: New truck - Getting old and tired

OK, I'm more motivated again....still old, but not tired. I've decided that maybe I should clay first. The truck was made in Detroit and sat for a couple of weeks in the shipping area and rail yard.

I've used clay for several years and know how to do it. No problem with that. However I do have a bit of a paint problem. I have some dust flecks under the paint and clear coat in several places. I didn't notice them until I was ready to start the detail. None are major...tiny little buggers. Just enough to tick off a perfectionist. Not at all bad enough for repaint. (Sometimes it's best to accept "what is" and move on. I learned that the hard way a long time ago.) Will clay remove the paint from these flecks? I sure don't want that.

I've always sort of wondered about this and I'd rather not find out on my own truck.

                        Tom

p.s. "Made in Detroit" and has dust flecks in the paint. Chrysler should not be all that proud of that.

The mild clay should just bump up over them, but can always clay around them if nervous.

                            I too, highly doubt it.

Clayed and applied ColorX. No problems and the truck "needed" both. Ultimate Wax in a few weeks maybe. But then, I'm sort of fond of ColorX.
