Re: How would you go about polishing these rims?
Is that a factory wheel or aftermarket (they almost look like the Mille Miglia Evo 5 with a Pontiac center piece)? If they're the factory OEM wheels then they have a clear coat on them so a metal polish is not what you want. A clear coated wheel can be treated much the same way you treat the paint on the rest of the car - clay, paint cleaner, polish, wax. If the clear is failing, however, then the only fix is to have the clear stripped off, the bare aluminum polished, and then either re-clear them or just deal with the upkeep of bare aluminum wheels - which can be a real pain in Minnesota! There are plenty of wheel refinishing places, many of them mobile, who can do the entire process for you at surprisingly reasonable prices.Michael Stoops

Okay these are genuine pontiac rims and are clearcoated. I'm trying to keep it out of the salt so i don't have flaking. So something like swirlx or ultimate polish would be a good cleaner. They are pretty shiney, but have many swirls.

Re: How would you go about polishing these rims?
I had this issue before and used 2500 grit sand paper and kept the surface super wet for a good wet sand and then followed up with Meguiars ultimate compount to take the light scratches out of the clear coat on the wheels. You dont apply pressure to the sand paper and do it in stages so you don't over sand the affected area. If 3 rounds of that doesn't work with about 30 seconds of light sanding each, then its through the clear coat and needs to be completely stripped as mentioned above. P.S. Powerball mini is your best bet with the ultimate compound on clear coated wheels.
