  • Car Washing at Self Service coin-operated stations

    Hello,

I wanted opinions on options for getting car wash for apartment dwellers like me, where the community does not allow washing car on premise. The only options for folks like me are to either go with the automated machines (which puts tons of swirls on paint), hand wash (where a careless ***** could ruin your car finish), or washing at self-service station (where they dis-allow using your own wash mitt and soap). Either options are not ideal, but they are the only options available (unless someone has better ideas).

This thread is for how to wash the car in self-service stations. These are generally coin-operated stations which cost ~$5 for 7-8 minutes. The options on the machine generally include pre-soak, brush wash, pressure water, and wax. The brushes are these locations are not the best, and you have to use the pressure water to just rinse the dirt off the brush before starting.

What I generally follow is this:
Use pre-soak to soak the car (1-2 minutes)
Use brush wash to apply soap from top to bottom (~3 minutes)
Use pressure water to remove water (1-2 minutes)
    Wax the car (1-2 minutes).

I generally finish everything within ~8-10 minutes, costing me around $7. Then I pull the car outside, and use a chamois towel to pat dry.

Are there better alternatives or ways to do this? Remember, most places will not allow you to carry your bucket to fill in water so you can wash yourself.

Usually any time using your own soap, buckets would have to be at odd hours. But even just your own mitt would be better than the brushes there.

The other main option is the water less wash products. Meguiars has the Wash and Wax Anywhere, and perhaps even better, the Rinse Free Wash in the Detailer Line. ONR has been around for a few years as well and is popular.

You are the perfect candidate for our new Ultimate Wash & Wax Anywhere product. In San Jose you don't need to worry about road salt during the winter, but obviously driving the car in the rain will get it fairly dirty so a simple quick detail spray isn't going to cut it for you. As you mentioned, the brushes at the coin-op places can be pretty nasty and we recommend avoiding them for anything except your wheels, unless you've got some really nice aftermarket wheels that could be scratched by the brush. But that doesn't mean the coin-op is out of the question. You might want to give this process a shot: take the car to the coin-op but just do the pre-soak, pressure wash, and maybe the spotless rinse if they have that (some do, some don't). The coin-op will get the heavy stuff off but not get the car totally clean, obviously, but that's OK. Don't dry the car, just drive it home and pull out the Ultimate Wash & Wax Anywhere and finish the job in your car port or open parking space. Or maybe better yet, if you can pull the car out of the wash bay and just move it out of everyone's way, use the UWWA right there. If you bring someone with you they could be vacuuming the car while you do the UWWA - surely nobody is going to complain about that since you're still feeding their machines, just multi tasking while you're at it.

Forum member greg0303 just did a nice write up on this product here and we also discuss proper use of it further down in that thread. We're confident that you'll really like this product and method for taking care of your car. We'll refund the purchase price if you're not satisfied - standard procedure for us.

Sweet!! Thanks much Murr & Mike!! The car wash I go to does have the spot-free rinse. I will give this a shot next time.

Just thought I'd throw this out there. Is there someone you can bring to the coin op with you to use a mitt while you use the wand? My dad and I do this all the time, especially in the winter when we don't have the hose hooked up at the house here. Once and a while we even bring a bucket. Owner never said anything, but the wand is always running so...

They generally don't mind when it is not crowded.. but in the south bay area, there are very few manual car wash places (there is one in Sunnyvale, one in Mountain View, and a couple in San Jose.. this is the land of hand wash!) so this place is generally busy unless I happen to find time on the middle of a working day.. so, generally speaking, it is not an option. But yes, if I keep the wand running and they keep making money, I doubt they would mind it..

Re: Car Washing at Self Service coin-operated stations

I used to go late at night when no one was using it and bring my own supplies. I could do a full wash and then just finish with spot-free rinse and be done in under 10 minutes start to finish. Now I just do a rinse-free wash with Meguiar's products at home.

I have Nomad Portable Pressure Washer which is a great little machine for car washing. It operates as 12V cigarette lighter/ 18V rechargeable battery product. The water tank capacity is 3.5 gallons so sometimes I used to have an extra 1 or 2.5 gallon water container with me for refills (de-inonized water from one of supermarkets will provide water spot free washing).

The best places to look for it would be: Amazon, Overstock or eBay.

You can see it in action here:

I have used Optimum No-rinse at the self-service sites. I bring a bucket full of clean water, a wash mitt and ONR. I first use the spray to wet the entire car and wash off any encrusted dirt, etc. Then I use the wash mitt with ONR to clean the car. Finally I spray it down again and wipe dry. Done.
