  • 02 Silverado HELP

My dad owns a 02 Chevy Silverado. Due to the major amounts of salt MN puts on the roads it started to rust on quite a few different spots. he took it in and had all rust fixed, but the body shop did a very poor job at masking it off causing alot of overspray. Also the paint on the new parts has never really very bright, always looked cloudy. So to sum up a bit, what kind of clay do i need to use to remove overspray, and how do i go about trying to bring back the paint?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Well, I think that clay can remove overspray to a certain degree, although I don't think it's the most effective, speaking from my one time experience. Maybe using some type of paint thinner will help, I used laquer thinner on a friends car whos car was vandalized with spray paint. It worked well.

As far as the cloudy paint, I don't have experience with paint that isn't from the factory. You could most likely try rubbing with UC and then UP to see if it clears it up maybe?

By the way, I posted about removing spray paint before, and Mike Stoops recommended red agressive clay or paint thinner from the same isle that has spray paint. Make sure you don't grab aircraft grade paint thinner haha.

For what it's worth, I just went to my old thread regarding spray paint and Michael Stoops left this message:

In the future, and for anyone else reading this, you should be able to get this sort of spray paint off with a paint thinner found in the same isle as the spray cans themselves. You'll need to proceed slowly, of course, but the factory cured paint on a modern car should withstand a light treatment with such a product, but the spray paint won't survive it. Even if you don't get it all off that way, the balance should then come off with either C2100 Pro Aggessive red clay and/or some M105 either on a rotary or a DA. We've seen fairly light spray paint fully removed with nothing more than a rotary, M105 and a wool pad. On this car the spray paint was heavier, but the above processes ought to do the trick. But we can't stress enough the need to proceed with caution here, and select a paint thinner designed for spray paints. We don't anyone to read "paint thinner" and go grab some aircraft stripper - crazier things have happened!

Most likely a combo of paint thinner, detailing clay and paint cleaner will be needed.

The body shop didn't polish it right to high gloss. After fresh paint is sprayed it gets sanded, then sanding marks get removed by paint cleaner/ compound and it gets polished to high gloss. Sometimes during spraying process unwanted affect of orange peel can be introduced as well (the reflection is badly distorted).

Any chance of pictures of affected area(s) ?

Unfortunatly i probably wont be able to get any pics soon. its snowing now possibly up to 8 inches. So i wont be able to wash it and post pics for a while. Basically every surface has overspray even the new bady parts they put on. They put on new box sides rocker panel and cab corner on the drivers side and redid the pass side rocker and cab corner. it feels like 80 grit sandpaper. Last summer i trie Ultimate compound by hand with a little improvment.
