removing interior dash treatments

How many of you actually "clean" the previous application of interior treatment before adding more? Most of the time I just top off what is already there. I have seen mixed results, especially putting ultimate protectant on top of the low gloss interior. Just wondering if there is any benefit to remove the previous layer with interior quick detailer wipes.

Also, a side question. Does anyone else sit in there vehicles on monday morning after a weekend detail and try not to move too much or touch any surfaces unless absolutely necessary and get stressed when someone rides with you and props there are on the door seal and leave a spot that looks like it has no protectant? Maybe I am just CDO (thats ocd for people with ocd, have to have the letters in the correct order......)

I'll do an APC wipe, then dress. Then QID a few times. Then APC wipe and dress.

I dont like the wipes myself...

If you plan to use an Ultimate Protectant then it's wise to remove previously used product. Ultimate Protectant may have a hard time to bond if the surface is not clean (it uses polymers). Quik Interior Detailer Cleaner, All Purpose Cleaner or All Purpose Cleaner Plus will prepare for UP application well.

Depending on how long it's been since the previous application of a dressing, there may not be a whole lot of it left when you go to apply the next round. These aren't permanent coatings and, like a wax, will degrade over time. A good indicator of "cleaning" taking place is the condition of your applicator following an application of any product - if the towel, pad, etc shows dirt (and not just the presence of some light dust) then you're doing at least some cleaning in the process anyway.

Obviously prep here is as important as it is anywhere else, so the ideal situation would be to lightly clean the surface prior to applying any sort of dressing or protectant to it. But if you're doing very light product applications, as you should, then there shouldn't be much of anything to clean up in the first place. Now, if you drive with your windows open all the time, or you have a convertible, the interior will get much dirtier than in a fully closed car. And if you're using M40 or similar, or even just QID, you've got sufficient cleaning in the product itself.
