  • Major Interior Odor Issue!!!

Hey guys. So if anyone remembers my past posts, I pretty much maintain the company vans where I work. Well, my boss just put the other kid that works there as the Driver now since the previous one quit. Man, this kid absolutely smells horrible, and it's not a once and a while thing, it is daily! So my question is, how in the world can I keep these vans from stinking? It's really bad guys, like, I will not drive the new van because it is that bad. Not even a mile down the road to take it through the drive through car wash. Another guy told me today, "sorry man, but I had to light a cig while driving the van (the kid left early one day) because I couldn't handle the stink." Please don't tell me to have a talk with the kid, my past manager has told him many times about his odor issue, and nothing has been done about it. So I hope you understand just HOW BAD this odor issue is. One last description, I went to move the kids coat off the handcart once, and almost threw up, I gagged big time.

Van #1 (MAJOR stink): Leather seats, Vinyl floor, and cloth headliner.
Van #2 (not that smelly, but I would like info on cleaning this as well): Cloth seats, Vinyl floor, cloth headliner.

PLEASE, What is it going to take guys? Wiping everything with APC+ is NOT helping!

Unfortunately that hasn't had any effect. My manager has told him to go home and shower multiple times with no luck. Other workers have made comments to him, but nothing has changed. So that aside, is there anything that can be done? I can already see though that I will be fighting a never ending battle for as long as he is sitting in that seat..

Pressure wash the interior??? Man, I am totally screwed aren't I Dude, it's probably all up in the vents too and stuff. It's "winter" here in Michigan right now so the windows are never opened on the van either...

I don't know how big your company is but you might think about going over your managers head. You might have labor laws that protect you from the "stink-bomb". He could be posing a health risk for other employees. Think about the bacteria he could be spreading around the inside of the van. Why don't all the employees all call in sick one day.....sick of smelling this filthy slob! " My manager has told him to go home and shower multiple times ".....this should be grounds for dismissal. A group "sick-out" might wake up management.

Man, he must be a really good worker in order for your boss to put up with that ****!

Have you tried Megs Odour Eliminator?

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

It's a privately owned machine shop with around 30 employees. I never thought of the bacteria before, eww that is so nasty I don't even want to think about that...

The kid means well (I call him a kid here even tho he is one year older than me, he is about to turn 21....) but in my opinion, losing him wouldn't have a huge impact on anything. Hes got an "I know it all" attitude which drives me absolutely nuts. He's 20 and he has done more than the 40year olds working there apparently. Unfortunately, my boss is not very aggressive in that aspect, and I don't mean that in an offensive way. I just can't see him letting the kid go, I think it would hurt my boss emotionally... I think he really sees potential in this kid, and wants to give him a chance. Don't get me wrong, he most likely will become a machinist as he is going to school for it, I just don't know how good of one he'll turn out to be...

Worst case scenario, I should be graduating from Oakland University in 2 years and will be leaving the machine shop environment for a profession in Information Technology, probably in the Networking area. The problem will be mine no more then.

I have not tried Meguiars Odor Remover, is it strong? Is it available in local auto stores?

With 30 employees, your boss must answer to someone. If he is not doing his job, then it's time to go above his head. And get others to back you up. You might think about a group of you requesting a meeting with your boss first before you go over his head. Let him know of your intentions. If the "kid" truly has some potential and is a hard worker then it's time for your boss to have a "sit-down" with him and let him know that if he can't clean up, then termination could be in his future. If there are no consequences, the "kid" will not respect your boss and continue his smelly ways.

Meguiars Odor Eliminator works very well. Pick a couple bottles up and spray all fabric in the interior; cloth seats, headliner, anything that u's fabric. I'd probably even do the leather seats as well. I sell cars at a small lot and I take care of alot of the cars also. I had a super nasty CR-V that I had detailed and it didn't get all the way dry. Long story short it smells like something died in there and Odor Eliminator took care of it.

Ugh, it's such an awkward situation. Part of me sees that type of meeting happening while the other half doesn't. It's complicated, I don't really know how to say it. You would have to work with me for a day or two to understand how this place operates, more so some of the people who work here ... Sometimes I think that the Chef Ramsay of machining or whatever needs to take over for a couple days and whip some people in shape.

I guess I may give that a shot and see what happens, looks to be under $10 so not a big gamble at all.

Haha Murr, are you implying that I may need more than just a bottle? I see it on Amazon, a gallon jug for $20something from various people. Do you know of any other chemicals that may work?

Yea....I hear what you're saying. I've had bosses like that. They can manage a business but can't manage people. The thing is....you are going to clean and de-stink the van and then the kid is going to get back in it and stink it back up. Why not assign one van to "stinky" and all the rest of you drive the clean ones?

That's what will probably happen. He drives the same van everyday as it is. So I'll make sure he stays in that one, which he will, and the other one will be for myself and the other guy who will drive when necessary. I'll give that Meguiars Odor Remover a shot, the van we will drive as a slight stink to it, nothing too bad at all. So do I just spray this stuff and walk away? Any tips for using it?

I hate dealing with interior odors, they can be a pain in the @#% to remove. I would suggest lighter fluid and a match, nothing can get past that
