  • Is color-x ok for multiple applications?

    Hi all,

I have a 1998 Honda crv with swirls and light to medium scratches in places and plan to do some paint correction (by hand) soon.

Products I have at my disposal are ultimate compound and color-x

I am setting up to do some test spots and was thinking of trying

    Uc followed by colorx
    Colorx followed by colorx again

    Questions

Should i be able to get good results by hand with these products on this car?

Is it ok to reapply colorx multiple times or is it not really designed for that?

I was planning to use foam applicators but should I use an mf pad when using colorx on its own?

I plan to finish with a coat of ultimate wax - When comparing test spots is it better to compare before or after applying the wax?

    Any advice appreciated!

You can use ColorX as much as you want. I love the stuff, but in my experience if UC doesn't correct the problem, ColorX will not. UC has a little more cut to it.

As for good results, you should do ok, but it all depends on how bad the problem is.

Well, yeah.... Some paints are harder to work on, but UC is the product to use.

Well, yes you can. But really not meant for it. I would expect you will want the UC for the defect removal anyway.

      I always like the foam.

For defect removal, you would want before. Though since ColorX has wax in it, you would either want to remove the wax, or remove the ColorX before it really dries.

Re: Is color-x ok for multiple applications?

Ultimately the result you achieve on your car when using these products by hand will depend on how severe the existing defects are, how effectively you use the products (hand work can be very tedious and tiring) and how the paint responds to the input (some paints are very resistant to buffing while others are a breeze to work on). But in theory you should be able to get excellent results using just these two products.

Now, as to multiple applications of ColorX, that's probably not a very effective use of your time. ColorX is a moderately strong cleaner wax so a second application will remove the first, a third will remove the second, etc. Where the cleaning action of ColorX could come in very handy is if the UC creates a small amount of haze on the finish - ColorX should clean that up very quickly and effectively. If you want a premium wax/sealant to use to really finish things off, you might want to look at NXT Tech Wax 2.0 or Ultimate Wax. Both are fully synthetic and will provide long lasting protection with a very high gloss.

Thanks for the info - I have been reading many posts about soft Honda paint, particularly your post on delicate paints. My main concern was the UC might be too aggessive, and ColorX too mild. But I didn't want to have to go and get some SwirlX or something else as well just yet - I'd prefer to use what I have if it has a reasonable chance to do the job.

OK, sounds like I should just test spot UC alone followed by ColorX and perhaps ColorX alone in areas where damage is light.

I have some Liquid Ultimate Wax and some Gold Class Plus. I'll try the UW.

Can always just walk outside a do a test spot, before you set aside a whole weekend. Then can get another product if needed, or check back here, etc.

UC alone, ColorX alone (perhaps wiped off right away before wax dries), and then UC followed by ColorX if UC seems to leave marring.

Can go UC then Ult. Wax (2 coats recomended) if the UC leaves a good finish.

Or ColorX (letting the ColorX dry) then Ult. Wax.
