  • wax build up? need to remove wax after several applications?

I have a garage kept 2011 tacoma that is only driven m-f. It is only driven 30 miles each day and never of the speed of 60mph. I have waxed it every 3 months and it has already been waxed 3 times since buying it. Occasionally i use deep crystal polish before waxing.

My question is will I get better wax performance if I remove the old wax with clay or is it ok just to layer on top of the old? I really dont have any scratches or swirls and the surface doesnt need clay for bonded particles. I only use deep crystal polish and ultimate liquid wax, no carnuaba.

Waxing every three months is a very good idea, and a plan that we highly recommend. If you do this regularly there is no need to strip anything prior to applying a fresh coat at the three month mark. What you should be doing every time you wash and dry the vehicle is to evaluate the finish, both by touch to determine if it's picked up some bonded contaminants, and visually in good light for the presence of any swirl marks.

Bonded contaminants will happen over time and even with limited exposure you just never know what oddball thing might happen. Swirls are inevitable, although you can drastically minimize the creation of new swirls by being very diligent in your washing and drying process since this is when most swirls are formed. But with proper routine washings, proper use of a quick detailer to remove light fallout before it has a chance to bond, and waxing regularly like you currently are, you're putting yourself way ahead of the game. Regular car care is easy car care, so spending a few minutes a week, or even every day, will ensure that your Tacoma stays looking great for many years to come.
