  • Storing Winter Wheels

Just changed into winter tires, washed the summer wheels and I am wondering should I wax the wheels before storage?
How about tires? Anything I should do?

    These are AMG alloy wheels.

When change summer/winter tires, I think it's the perfect time to wash them up (and wax them if I time). No tire shine or anything like that- just get them clean. Then lower the air pressure in the tires to about 20psi and store them stacked up on sidewalls, on a drop cloth and covered up; or standing upright if you have shelves designed for tires (see link below for an example from Tirerack). You should not store them on the treads on a flat surface, especially fully inflated.

I don't know if this link is posted correctly, but here it is... http://www.tirerack.com/accessories/...y=Tire+Storage

Some people recommend it (I have no idea why) and some say do not do it (may cause eventual rim leaks) I don't bother to do it.

One thing you might want to look at are those big hurking paper leaf bags. Being made of paper, they 'breath' and surly big enough to stuff a most common size wheel.

I picked up a 10 pac earlier in the fall (my local ACE hardware) for $2.99.

Wheels was washed yesterday and I waxed the outer surfaces as well. I tried to wax the inside but they were too dirty. Apparently, they're dirts that can be removed by wax, not by car soap.

I will put them in tote bags and store for the winter later.

I like to wash and wax my wheels thoroughly before storage. This year I also added in Aerospace 303 for the tire sidewalls. Not that these tires will last moer than 1 more season being almost track tires but it made me feel better.

That said if they are your typical clear coat factory wheel even just making sure they are nice and clean would be worlds better than storing them dirty.
