Re: Did I ruin my CAR!!!!
It's hard to tell from the pics, but your clear coat (around the scratch) doesn't look too bad to me.
As for the scratch repair itself..Originally posted by BluelineI own a silver vehicle and a black vehicle owns me. The black one demands attention, washing, detailing, waxing and an occasional dinner out at a nice restaurant. The silver one demands nothing and it looks just fine. I think the black vehicle is taking advantage of me, and the silver car is more my style. We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Re: Did I ruin my CAR!!!!
My guess is that the acetone just removed all your wax. I was thinking of removing some pin striping (paint) from my car and a body shop guy said to use acetone as it would not hurt the car paint. Said that acetone evaporates quickly before it does any damage. Tried it on an inconspicuous spot and it did not have any effect on the car's paint. I'd just use some polish, cleaner and wax.

Re: Did I ruin my CAR!!!!
To answer the question you posed in the thread title "Did I ruin my CAR!!!!" - no, you didn't but someone else sure did. The only way you were going to really fix that key scratch was to go to a body shop and have the panel repainted. Doing what you did, although it certainly didn't fix the problem, it really didn't make it any worse as far as the body shop is concerned.
Since it obviously doesn't look very pretty and you've altered the appearance somewhat, let's see about cleaning it up at least a little bit. Ultimate Compound would be our first choice to correct some of this and restore the gloss. Don't even think about wet sanding to level this down unless you're skilled in both that process and rotary buffing to remove the sanding marks. From what we know about your history here on MOL, you don't have any experience with either process. That's fine, just keep in mind that this is not really the time to take it upon yourself to experiment. Start with UC on a wax applicator pad to bring the shine back up first, then let's take it from there.Michael Stoops

Re: Did I ruin my CAR!!!!
It appears that is a solid red and not metallic color. If so you may want to try the product from Dr.Colorchip. This is a good product for the DIY type person. If that isn't you kind of project then a body shop would be my next stop.Live like you're not afraid to die.Don't be scared, just enjoy your ride. Chris Ledoux RIP
