  • Ultimate Compound equivalent for rotary buffer?

Bought a bottle of Ultimate Compound to try to remove or at least reduce somewhat the appearance of light swirls and scratches on a late model BMW, silver paint. Tried it out on a spot rubbing it by hand with a foam Meguiar's applicator pad. After some effort, the result was no visible difference. Figured maybe my technique is wrong or the paint is too hard, but really have no idea.

Even if I eventually hit on the right combination of product and technique, I can't see spending all day trying to do it by hand. I'd like to try the rotary buffer and another product. Read somewhere in these forums that UC is not recommended for use on a rotary buffer.

Is there a Meguiar's consumer line product that is recommended for a rotary buffer to remove light scratches and swirls from what may be hard paint? I have a wool pad, a W64 backing plate and a W8006 Soft Buff foam pad for the rotary. Should I try any of these with the UC before going on to some other product?

    TIA

Unless you a a pro at using rotary I would not try it. You will end up with more swirls then you can imagine. Yes you can try 105 follow up with 205. I know and speak from BAD experience using rotary. You should see my old Cadillac DHS (2002) well, I had to trade it in.

The equivalent product of UC that can be used with a rotary is M105.

How about investing in the G110v2 D/A? It's a lot safer to use than a rotary and great results can be achieved with Ultimate Compound with a foam polishing pad.

Re: Ultimate Compound equivalent for rotary buffer?

Thanks guys. Appreciate the concern about using a rotary buffer. While I have no experience with a rotary buffer, I have used angle grinders, including a 5+ horsepower large angle grinder, to cut, wire brush, sand, and grind steel and cast iron and to remove paint and rust from same. I am confident I can control the pressure and movement of the machine in uniform passes in different directions and I think I have some idea of the need to keep the touch light enough to avoid unwanted cutting and too much heat. My thinking is if I can work an angle grinder, I can control a rotary buffer, and the only unknown for me is the least aggressive combination of compound/pad I need.

As for investing in the G110v2 D/A, that was my initial thought, since it seemed that's what everyone else on MOL was using or recommending. I began looking about two or three months ago and haven't been able to find one. In the meantime, I got to actually try a D/A machine and quickly noted it didn't have anywhere near the power of a rotary. And so, having thought about it, I have convinced myself I can handle a rotary buffer, especially working at far lower speeds than typically used with an angle grinder.

Thanks again. Unless I hear otherwise, looks like I'm going to try M105 with a foam pad and see what happens.

I also have used power tools, you name it i tried it. After all been around 64 yrs. If you think you can master rotary I would suggest for you to go to junk Yard and do some practicing. Rotary on a good car without previous experience is NOT recommended.

amazingly great results in the hand of a pro
            and
Absolutely scary results in the hands of someone who is not experienced with it

              Very good advice.

A junk yard hood is also great to practice.

Correcting defects by hand is not easy with the best of products. I have no experience with a rotary but I have gotten good resuls with UC and a PC7424xp with 5.5"LC white pads. An orange pad would give you more cut if needed. With the white pad UC finished down ready for LSP.
