  • Winter Wax

I have the following Meguiars waxes: GC, Yellow Wax, #21, Cleaner Wax (both lines), #16, NXT, UW.

My car is silver is well maintained. I did the full detailing job 2 months ago; WASH - CLAY - UC -DC_POLISH - UW - UW.

I will do the last pre-winter wax soon. Like many of us, I will wax a lot less in the winter months so longevity is very important. I am thinking to do one of the following combinations:
    1. CW, UW
    2. UW, #16
    3 UW, UW
    4. NXT, UW

    What do you think?

here in pa it gets so cold we dont wax from nov to april.so wax has to try to last 5 months .
    but salt is just awful.
so what we do is go to car washes and use hot wax thing on it.

I pick door number 2. I have never used UW, but #16 is fantastic. My last wax for the winter is usually in Late October/early November...clay, ColorX, #16. I never wash the car in the winter, and while it is a black car, it is white from road salt most of the time. Road salt will NOT hurt the clearcoat, but will damage unprotected metal so I get my cars oiled every fall. In April I wash it, and darn, if #16 is still beading like crazy. Been doing this for four years on my new car, and the black paint is pretty well flawless.

Ditto on door # 2. My winter detail has been #21 and topped with #16. Lasts from November to April in the lousy WI winters and tons of road salt. This combo seems to handle Touchless washes well too and still beads profusely come April. This year it will be UW instead of #21, as I believe it is Meg's longest lasting sealant and I've several tins of #16 left.

I don't know how would #16 react with UW.
UW can be tricky, the application of UW is different than other waxes. UW has to be applied and be wiped off in a few minutes.

Another option is 2 coats of #16.

Oiled? Do you mean you put something on the metal?

I have found that applying UW and waiting awhile (30 minutes+) is much more effective than wiping it off in a few minutes. UW bonds better if left on for longer than a few minutes ime.

Oiled? Well sort off. It is like an oil, in that it repels water, but does not damage rubber parts. I get the cars sprayed each fall by one of those commercial rust protection companies. They spray the stuff underneath and inside all the panels, doors etc. About $80 and guarenteed not to rust as long as you do it once a year.

                    Re: Winter Wax

Been detailing for a long time...over 50 years. (In the old days we called it washing and waxing. ) #16 was my go to product for a long time, especially because it was silicone free and body shops weren't all that "in-tune" to getting all the wax off a car before a repaint. Well anyhow...my question... Is #16 still the most durable wax that Meguiar's has ever made. I don't think the factory folks will give us a straight answer. It was considered by most to be more durable than #26.

Back to the OP. I usually use ColorX and then follow up in a couple of weeks or maybe even a month with NXT or Ultimate wax. Sometimes it is just the ColorX. Whatever, I try to will try to use Ultimate Spray Wax after every other wash. Now that is some good stuff that wasn't around 50 years ago.

Back in July I did half of my black trunk with #16 and half with NXT. The trunk had been clayed and cleaned with ColorX. The M16 is still beading like day one, the NXT not so much, actually not much at all. When the trunk was wet, the difference was striking. I never thought of taking a picture..perhaps because it would be a non event anyway, as #16 is not made anymore. It is such a shame.

Thanks for the info. Longevity is important because after this wax, I may not be able to wax for 3-4 months.

I just did the full detailing job (Clay-UC-UP-UW-UW) 2 months ago and UW a month ago. Also, I use UQW every week so my paint should be clean.

Now I am thinking of the following:
                        1. DC_Clean, 16, 16
                        2 SwirlX, 16, 16

                          Re: Winter Wax

You will love #16. One tip....put it on very, very thin, or it is a pig to get off. IMHO, one coat of 16 is enough. If you are doing a second coat in the off chance you might miss a spot, what is the worry? Why go over a whole car a second time. If you do happen to see a missed spot, just do that spot.

I would not know if I miss a spot, especially if I apply it thinly.

I remember a few years ago, it was recommended to apply 2 coats, with at least 12 hours of cure time.

Interesting...where do you live that you need to protect from rust? How old is the car you are protecting? I havent seen rust on newer cars....ever.
