  • Favorite method for applying Paste Wax via DA Polisher

I have several nice paste waxes now that I bought when I was primarily working by hand, but now I have a fancy DA I want to use them with. The Meguiars waxes don't seem like they can pop out of the tin like some other waxes...so what's the best way to get them onto the pad with as little waste as possible?

I was thinking the back of a plastic spoon or something similar. Unfortunately I don't have any 4" pads that I can just dunk into the wax container. I've heard some people over on AGO talking about using a stiff paintbrush, which sounds interesting.

I'm anxious to hear some suggestions.

The only methods I've seen are using the 4" pads for the Meg's paste waxes and removing the wax from the tub on smaller waxes. If I didn't have either solution I would just use my hand.

How about a plastic butter knife? Get the paste wax like you'd get butter and spread it to your foam pad like you would on bread.

Good idea! That could just work..

I too have only heard of doing it via a 4" pad. I think there's a thread here somewhere showing how to do it..

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

You always use a 1" (or so) putty knife...just lightly scrape across the wax and reverse the process to the pad. Remember, it doesn't take too much to 'do the job.'

I prefer a 4" LC grey pad when applying pastes, they work nicely with the wide Meguiar's wax tins. I have heard some turn the machine on and off quickly but personally found this puts too much product on the pad (at least with soft waxes), I prefer to gently run the pad over the paste and visually check for even coverage and an emphasis on putting THIN product on the pad. If the wax container is not wide enough on some pastes such as the PBMA lineup, Dodo Juice, etc the wax will slide out of the tin and it can be held while applying to the pad in a similar fashion.

If the wax container is too narrow for a pad and the wax will not come out of the container (Autoglym HD comes to mind) you may want to try applying the wax to the pad before affixing it to the machine, as if you were treating it like a standard yellow applicator when waxing by hand, then affixing the pad to the machine. It can get a bit awkward removing the pad from the machine to reapply wax but you shouldn't have to do this too many times since a little wax goes a long way.

I use a butter knife. Scrape a thin layer and spread the wax on the pad like butter on toast. Put the pad on the paint and start at speed 1-2 and the heat melts the wax and spreads it evenly over the pad surface. A little wax goes a long way.

Meguiar's scents + butter knife application?

Not cool. I'm going to start eating pads!

While the 4" pad application method works great, the use of knife, spoon, spatula etc to spread a very small amount of product onto a larger pad also works very well. It's just a bit of a trade off, really; with a 4" pad all you do is lightly brush the pad against the product in the can while the tool is switched off, but then you only have that small pad to spread it with. Applying to a larger pad with a knife takes a few seconds longer to do and you have to be careful about where you set the knife so as to avoid picking up any contaminants, but you then have the benefit of a larger pad to apply the product to the paint.

Which ever method you go with, just remember that a very little bit of product goes a very long way, so go easy on it.

Alright I am glad I came across this thread. I just received my GG6 today along with Meguiars backing plates and Finishing pads, still waiting for the polishing pads. I have a lot of paste wax as well since I have been working by hand forever. I like the butter knife idea, I will definitely give that a shot.

I don't have to cover the pad 100% though correct? The product should spread over the pad rather quickly when turned on, and as I have heard many times, a little goes a long way. Maybe a quick mist of UQD on the pad with the paste wax will work out well?

I just got a GG6 as well I don't think it would have to cover the pad, but I would think you'd want to apply it as thinly and uniformly as possible -- that's why I was thinking the back of a spoon could work.

Heh, I think either way would still work pretty good. I guess it's just trial and error from here.

I really might have to invest in a 4" backing plate and a 4" pad or two.

Yep, I bought those along with the GG6. I got the meguiars backing plate for their 7inch pads and also the meguiars 3 inch backing plate for their 4 inch pads. The smaller ones will be very ideal for the smaller areas.
