I would recommend using something like turpentine before resorting to gasoline. Another possibility is something citrus, such as lemon juice. BillyJack recommended a few posts back to try using Mr Clean Magic Eraser and I've heard good results, so you may want to try that too. Any chance you could get a photo or two of the problem areas? Sounds like it's caked on there good!
If you do want to test with gasoline I would try in a small spot, see what happens and then thoroughly clean it to make sure any gasoline residue is gone.
