  • Meguiars Supreme Shine MF Towel: Low Quality?

I recently washed and waxed my car. I had one, new Supreme Shine MF, which I used to buff off the ULW. After washing the towel with a moderate amount of detergent, and on "light" setting, I then put the towel into the dryer. I put the towel in for 40 minutes on and the towel was still quite damp, I then put the towel in to dry for 30minutes on low and it was completely dry. I noticed, all of the outter edges of the towel are now frayed, not heavily, but it seems the beginning of the end for this towel.
I have a Meguiars MF foam pad (even coat applicator) which has been washed 4 times and has shown NO wear at all, no frays.

Has anyone else had this experience with Megs supreme shine MF?
Perhaps all MF towels do this, I am new to car detailing.

I find the Supreme Shine towels to be of good, not great quality (for the price, they are great). You do have to be careful washing them, I usually wash with a liquid detergent on warm, then dry on low heat. I have about 10 of them that I have washed 4-5 times now and they look good as new, so I would say your experiences are out of the ordinary.

Do you have a washing machine with an agitator? That could be what is tearing up the towel.

Sounds unusual.. I have been washing mine for years.

Can certainly post a pic, check with Customer Service, etc. They'll help if it is a problem.

I machine wash mine and then hang them to dry (old skool).
        No issues here.

I've been washing and drying towels that I still have 3+ years later. Only towels I have had to throw away were ones I dropped. It might be something with the dryer?

I can't think low heat would have done much damage, unless your low is still pretty hot, and you left them in there a long time after they were dry. They do dry very, very quickly.

Mines are all good still, but I never wash in a washer.
              I use: http://www.autogeek.net/mideco128oz.html

I fill a 5gallon pail with water/ 1 oz of Micro Restore soap....agitate with a toilet plunger (lol) rinse well a couple times and all my micro fibers, foam applicators, etc are clean & good as new. Megs SS MFs low quality?? Nope, still thick & plush....btw, i always hang dry

Re: Meguiars Supreme Shine MF Towel: Low Quality?

I suspected that this was an isolated incident.
I would guess that the fraying is a result of the agitator, it has been quite aggressive to clothes and other washed articles in the past.
Also, out dryer's "low" tends to be about 70-80% what High is. Low can sometimes come out quite hot.
I am guessing that these elements caused the damage to the MF.

I will wash the MF in a mesh bag next time, the bags used for washing hand wraps. I may then give the towel 10 minutes or so on low and then air dry.

                  Update:
I contacted Meguiars customer support and they told me that it was rare for their MF towels to fray at all.
Meguiars offered to send me a replacement one.
I will update once I get and use the microfiber towel. Meguiars has excellent customer support!

If the towel ends up being durable, I will buy three more.

                    Update2:
Replacement seems fine. I found a good deal, so I ordered 9 more.

Yeah, me and my dad have a total of 10 maybe... we grab a random 3 or so for drying when we wash one of our cars, and wash after. They have lasted for years.

I would expect you to be fine.

I have a couple and they frayed up pretty quickly on me too. Maybe a bad batch?

Having a SS paint job, I wonder what this is referring to?
SS = Supreme Shine Microfiber - (Consumer Line) -or- Single Stage (Automotive Paint)
