  • single stage paint process

How does a car get single stage paint? Is it applied or does it turn into from the clearcoat being removed?
And how do you restore a single stage paint? I heard polishing because its so easier to go through the paint. But then what seal it glaze it how many coats how many times so it wont turn dull again?

    Re: single stage paint process

Single stage paint is paint without clear coat on it . It comes in many forms of enamel . If it a solid ( non metallic ) color you can use a mild compound to clean it . Follow with polish and wax of choice . If it is a metallic color , then I would NOT use a compound of any . It is real easy to go through the layers . A cleaner wax or polish will work best. You may use a clay bar on both .

Single stage paint was once the predominant finish used by Automobile manufacturers. Starting in the mid 80's, thanks to emerging paint technologies and increasing restrictions on VOC emissions, the auto companies began the switch to the basecoat / clearcoat process. Meguiar's makes many products that work extremely well on SS paint, such as M07, M03, M80. You didn't mention your year or make of vehicle, or the paint condition, but here's the best tutorial I've seen on restoring SS paint:http://www.autotraderclassics.com/ca...sationId=21363
It was written by Mike Phillips, formerly in a product training capacity with Meguiar's.
As an example of the effectiveness of Mike's process, here's a split shot of my El Camino roof when I was deep in the process.
