  • exterior detail without washing first?

soo i want to do a exterior detail on my z28 ( swirl remover, polish then wax) but i was wondering can i do it without washing the car? the car is clean and whenever i drive it i always wipe it down with quick detail to get the dust off. i kinda didnt want to go through the hassle of washing it, drying it and then removing the water spots. so can buff the paint without washing it, if the paint surface is clean? it has a layer of Megs UW for the top layer.

Washing is just to get the surface clean. So you might QD before detailing, just make sure the surface is clean. Or if real light dust, claying should take care of it safely as well.

I would wash with soap and water.

Personally, I would wash as well. If your gonna be doing a full detail, a wash actually doesnt take that long compared to claying, paint cleaning etc.

If you're gonna do a full detail (claying/ swirl removal) and your vehicle is in a good shape (except light dust) you may just quick detail it and proceed with next step.

While it's possible that just wiping down with QD is all that's needed to wash the surface before buffing, think about how long it's been since you last gave the car a true bath and how much exposure it's had since then. A museum car that is regularly wiped down but might not be actually "washed" also doesn't get any real exposure to industrial fallout, road grime, etc. So nothing is built up in panel edges, seams, trim edges, etc. A car that's regularly driven on the street will start to accumulate these things and a QD wipe down may not remove it all. But run your polishing pad over these areas and it will, often dragging the dirt back onto the paint.

It's a judgment call on your part, but certainly something to consider.
