  • Difference between UP and UC???

They both say they will remove scratches/swirls, so what is the difference? Is one better for newer paint? The paint is in good condition and I don't want to apply something strong which will ruin it.

The main difference is that Ultimate Compound is a lot more aggressive in terms of defect removal or cleaning ability than Ultimate Polish. With everything else equal (i.e. application method, application media, arm speed and pressure), Ultimate Polish will remove less swirls and defects than Ultimate Compound. Even though Ultimate Polish is less aggressive, it has a lot more polishing oils to enhance and revive the paint.

    Hope this helps.

Ok, so it sounds like I should only use UC if the UP doesn't remove everything

Some scratches the were caused by shoes stepping into the car, as well as some deeper ones on the rear bumper from previous damage

Sounds like you need to use UC follow with UP and top it off with your favorite wax.

Generally speaking you use the least aggressive method to get the job done so you're right about trying to use UP first and if it doesn't work then you proceed with UC.

Like what Mark58 said, it seems like you'll need to use UC because of the severity of your scratches. Since you have UP already then use it as a follow up to UC then top it off with your favorite wax.

Dont try the whole area though... just do a test spot with the milder product.

Worst comes to worst you may need to sand and buff these scratches out depending on the depth of the scratches involved!

Hold on now, let's not jump into sanding and buffing too quickly here. And sometimes just suggesting that can lead to serious problems. No offense to our new member ScionTC here, but we're talking to someone who is just learning the basics (like the difference between two very different consumer products) so we don't want to steer him into very advanced processes just yet.

You would be amazed at the things we've seen people do based on a simple recommendation or because they saw a YouTube video. We've even seen come back and complain that their paint is dull after sanding it, not realizing the full impact of what they've done.

Daniel, the intent here is not to slap your wrist, but merely to point out to others to take things slowly when you're learning. Who knows, maybe the scratches are so deep that some wet sanding is needed. Or maybe some repainting even. But let's cross that bridge when, and if, we come to it.

Haha, trust me, I won't be sanding any time soon, and I plan to apply by hand and see how that goes, they are not visible enough to warrant spending the money on a DA.

I'll try out the UP this weekend, so we'll see how well it works. When we say test area, should I do the entire door sill, or just one part of it??

Well, you can test as much as you like... but if it wont work on a small area, probably wont work on a big one, so just a waste of time.
