  • Advice needed detailing a Silver/Green Camry

Hello all...I have a new silver/green (best to describe it) Camry V6. Have used NXT 2.0 on my black Jeep with impressive results for awhile now maintaining with UQD. Prior to that Gold Class. (still use sometimes) Basically just stuck with Megs consumer line since I started using their products 15 years ago. Haven't tried the new Ultimate Wax yet they just came out with. After reading some of these posts about UW, I'm kind of on the fence about using it. This Camry is the first vehicle I've bought with a light paint color. My question to everyone experienced with UW so far is... do you think it will really make any difference on this color? I plan to clay first, followed by Ultimate Polish or Showcar Glaze then NXT or UW...just need some advice from the folks with these type paint colors what their experience was after using these products on their car.

    Thanks alot!

Not sure if I will recommend UW. Please refer to my other thread; UP then UW. I gave my experience with UW in the last post 1-2 hours ago.

Maybe I did something wrong. I never have streak issues with other Meguiares waxes before; NXT, GC, M21, etc.

Ult Polish and Show Car Glaze are two different types of products.

Ult. Polish is a cleaner/polish, Show Car Glaze is a pure polish. I would go with the Ult. Polish, since that would be your only cleaning step.

UP it is then followed by the new UW but going to get it in paste form instead of liquid...paste seems to be the best to use because of streaking? Will this really be noticeable on a lighter colored car?

Well, the current consensus seems to be do 2-3 panels, then remove. I'll try it that way next time...

I did the whole car like usual and let it sit, seemed to come off ok. My car is light as well, so if there was a streak or two, I didnt see it.

Ok will do...since UP isn't a pure polish, would using Show Car Glaze after UP add more depth and gloss followed by 2 thin coats of UW?

Can always do a test spot, but I doubt you will see much difference with #7.

              BTW,
Enjoyed the Boundary House this summer, though have to find something a bit more 'local' next time down there. Seemed a bit 'chainish', but maybe it isnt.

Any streaking that may occur with UW or any other wax is going to be most noticeable on darker colors. Use of the liquid version is best done by applying to a couple of panels and then wiping off after no more than a 3-5 minute dry time. The paste can be applied to all painted surfaces and allowed to dry normally prior to wipe off.

UP may not be a pure polish but it is very rich in polishing oils and does a fantastic job making colors deeper and richer. Using #7 after UP would be a duplication of your efforts, and on a light colored vehicle would probably not yield a very noticeable improvement in gloss.

Re: Advice needed detailing a Silver/Green Camry

Thanks Michael and Murr1525! I appreciate all of your advice and feedback! I'm set now. I have the weekend off and its not supposed to be so hot and humid. The heat index has stayed in the 105 range since July. If the weather co-operates, I'll get started early Sat morning. Haven't used any of the Ultimate line yet..can't wait to see how it turns out!

Murr1525, I agree the Boundary House is more on par with a chain restaurant and very expensive. As a local, I've been to just about all of them. If you want traditional Calabash seafood, I recommend next time you try Ellas just down and across the street from the Boundary House or The Seafood Hut across from them. If you like a water view, try Captain Nance's or The Dockside, both on the waterway. They are located right where the local shrimp boats dock. The local ocean touring boats also depart from there. That's where alot of fresh seafood comes in and you are more likely to get fresh seafood at the restaurants I mentioned above. If you like cooking your own, there are a couple of stands down there also that sells seafood when it comes in off the boats. The owner of Captain Nance's also runs a stand there. You can't get any fresher than shrimp that was just swimming a few hours ago!

Sounds good... just have to drive further down that road and look around. I try to end up in/around Myrtle Beach for a week at the beach most summers.

Yep just continue down River Rd. and all of those I mentioned are located there. You can't go wrong with any of them but Ella's and the Hut are our favorite. Also if you like italian, Tonys is the BEST...they have incredible pizza, spaghetti and lasagna. They are on the same road on the right, just before the dock.

Let me get your advice again...I just examined my paint. It feels smooth overall so I don't think I need to clay it...does that UP have enough "cleaner" in it in case there is something on the surface before I use the UW? OR do you suggest something like #9 to start out with after washing to achieve a clean swirl free surface before UP and UW? I just got back from advance auto and purchased all new microfiber towels, UP, and UW. They did not have any Swirl X and the last time I was at wallyworld they didn't carry it either. They did have the #9 tho.

Re: Advice needed detailing a Silver/Green Camry

#9, SwirlX, Ult. Polish are all mild cleaner/polishes. SwirlX probably being strongest of the 3.... But you would be fine with them all.

Up to you if you clay or not... I generally would when new, or if you havent before. If you have clayed before, and know what smooth will feel like, then ok.

Dont think I am there often enough to try all those places, but we'll see.

Re: Advice needed detailing a Silver/Green Camry

Thanks for all the advice Murr! Will clay it to be on the safe side...I know the surface is supposed to feel like "baby oil on a mirror" right? The surface doesn't quite feel like that by any means..then again I haven't waxed or polished it in several months..just a wash every 2 weeks and then UQD right after. It sits in the garage and driven only a couple times a week so not really exposed to the elements. Just want to be sure I am doing what I need to do to start with a clean fresh surface and to get the most benefit from the polish and wax. Thought maybe I need to clean the paint first but if you think UP has enough cleaner as well as polish I'll just stick with it then.

So my plan will be GC wash-> clay-> UP-> 2 thin coats UW. Will try to post some pics of the end result when I'm through sometime this week. Couldn't do it this weekend after all..plan to start tomorrow.

Well when you're down, now you know where the locals prefer to go, so you know its got to be good Ha Ha!

Well, I know when I started off, I thought i knew what a smooth surface was. Then I clayed for the first time, and found out... So I just wasnt sure if you had used clay on other cars before, able to judge smooth, that sort of thing.

Sounds good, give it a shot.
