  • 3-4 section passes with UP vs 1-2 with UC which is less intrusive ?

    Gentlemen,

I am a beginner with the Megs DA, I have done many test spots and had a fair amount of success on a few family cars. On my 2011 model Nissan, I am finding that I get about the same result with the Ultimate polish and either a yellow Megs pad or a orange Lake Country Pad or about half as many passes with same pads and Ultimate Compound to get rid of the original swirls and scratches. I have tried quite a bit of one or the other on different 2x2 sections and have boiled down to this,

Is doing more passes with UP better than less passes with UC as far as preservation, I am guessing it doesn't matter, and that it takes the same amount of correction and therefore the same amount of paint removal, just less work with the UC.
    Would you agree ?

Thanks and like many, I have benefited from all the knowledge here and am really grateful,

UC sounds good to me. Yup, doing the same amount of 'work' to the paint either way in less time.

      Thanks Murr
I needed a reality check, I've been staring at swirls all night

Doesn't the UP have added polishing oils that are supposed to 'moisturize' the paint and add gloss?

Yes, you would lose some polishing oils. So you may want to follow up with UP, or a pure polish. Or use the UP next time. The waxes have some polishing oils as well.

On a brand new clear coated car, the polishing oils arent as critical.

I will follow up with UP , I am left with almost no swirls or scratches, I can tell a few of the small scratches left must be deeper, I will leave them be for now. But the overall effect is more dull or hazy(but without the original swirls) so I am hoping that the follow up with UP will bring back the gloss/shine ? Would you recommend any particular pad or method if the Soft buff 2.0 7" Black finishing pad and UP don't give me back as much gloss or shine as it had before removing the swirls/scratches ?

I feel like I had that " ah ha" moments last night with the UC and the orange pad, got my arm movement slowed down and I saw the swirls get zapped. Now I have got to get the clarity or gloss back and I should be good. None of the other cars I have had a little practice with were black, so I see now, how much of a different challenge it is compared to some of the metallic flake light colors I had early success with.
            Thanks guys

Make sure you do at least 2 light pressure slow passes with UP on black. It should get rid of any haze. It worked for me on a black car.
