  • How to care for Fresh Paint

Hi, i have just signed up to the Forum.I have had some paint done on a car, they used PPG metallic base/clear.After asking the shop what their recommendations were for how long to wait before waxing,i was told i could wax right away.I also discovered that they had already applied a wax product before i picked up the car,3M Rosa i believe.I didn't think it was right to have waxed the paint, after reading a lot about the subject,so i washed the car with Meguiar's 62,and then hand rubbed it down with Meguiar's 81 in an attemp to remove the 3M wax product.Do you think this is ok,and will i have removed the wax to enable the paint to cure properly.I was planning on waiting around 3/4 months before wax after asking PPG what they recommended. Is it common practice for shops to wax fresh paint, and tell customers it is safe to do so,just because the paint was baked.

It's very unusual. You would normally leave the fresh paint unprotected/ wax free for at least 30 days to let it fully out-gas. Some painters even recommend period of 60-90 days.

Even during this cure time you can still touch your paint with paint polish or cleaner/ polish if needed. Ultimate Polish, DC2 Deep Crystal Paint Polish or M07 Show Car Glaze should work fine. Just no wax.

its not common practice but it happens more often then not. You should usually wait about 30 days to wax for a re spray. IMO I dont think any damage will be done, it will just extend the cure time of the paint.

      EDIT

I over looked that the car was baked..........how long was it in the oven? Your painter knows best. If he invested in the oven and decided to wax your vehicle he felt assured that the paint was cured.

Thanks for the feedback,i'm not sure how long it was baked for,i'll need to ask them.Does it make a big difference if it's baked, does it speed up the curing. My real concern was that as they had waxed it,the curing process had been halted up to the time that i applied 81,and that it may have caused damage in some way.

Baking a car speeds up everything. Usually its done at 20min to 40 min intervals on high heat or 3 hours on low heat. Most of the gas gets released during this process.

Your car will be OK. Besides that it's too late to change what has already been done. I used too wax my vehicles shortly after paint work with no ill effects. Just don't put any more on for a while. #81 should have removed any wax that had been applied. (I've been messing with "detailing" for over 50 years.)
